Cricket South Africa - all about teams
Cricket South Africa is the governing body for cricket in South Africa, which manages the development of South African men’s and women’s cricket both nationally and internationally. This organization is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), and 11 other countries of the world adhere to this status. At the moment, Pholetsi Moseki manages CSA.
Cricket South Africa: how cricket developed in South Africa
Cricket was brought to South Africa by the British in the early 19th century. According to historical data, it is believed that this happened during the occupation, the military actions of which were led by General Sir James Craig. Officer Charles Anguish was part of the Marylebone Cricket Club, the first cricket team established in South Africa.
The first official cricket club was founded in 1843 in Port Elizabeth, and in 1876 the first local championship “Champions Bat” was presented, which was held between the following cities: Cape Town, Grahamstown, King William’s Town, and Port Elizabeth.
10 years later, in 1888, two cricket grounds appeared: “Newlands” in Cape Town and “Old Wanderers”, which was constructed in Johannesburg. A year later, in 1889, these sites hosted the first foreign guests from England. By the way, one of the matches was determined by historians as the first test. So South Africa became the third country in the world to play in tests for the first time.
In 1909, the Imperial Cricket Conference was established, which included South Africa, Australia, and England. The organization was created to regulate the conduct of international matches between these three national teams.
After the First World War, cricket declined, and for 10 years they tried to revive it again. Over time, it was possible not only to revive the team, but also to begin spreading cricket to the rest of South Africa, which did not belong to the British diaspora. However, racial contradictions forced cricket to remain at the point of imperfection for a long time. First-class cricket and international tournaments could be played exclusively by white people.
For 50 years, the racial conflict in South Africa has been very acute. It got to the point that the ICC banned South Africa from playing in cricket competitions since 1970. Some players tried to save their careers and participated in matches for other countries, but upon returning home they were threatened with a lifetime ban from playing professional cricket.
In 1991, South Africa was able to reach an agreement with the International Cricket Council, demonstrating that it was ready to change the political system within the country.

In 2003 and 2007, South Africa has already hosted the Cricket World Cup and the World Twenty20. In 2006, Ashwell Prince became the first non-white captain of the South African cricket team.
In 2012, the South African national team became the first to top the International Cricket Council ranking in all recognized cricket formats.
Cricket South Africa: how the organization works
At the moment, cricket is one of the most famous sports in South Africa. Of course, the development of cricket was influenced to a greater extent by the organization of Cricket South Africa.
Cricket South Africa in its final version was formed by the merger of several South African cricket unions. Initially, there were two separate organizations in South Africa – the South African Cricket Union and the South African Cricket Board. This division was connected with some issues of the racial identity of the inhabitants of South Africa, which we mentioned above. In 1991, these organizations decided to unite with each other, and created the United Cricket Board of South Africa (abbreviated UCB), putting an end to ethnic strife.
In 2002, Cricket South Africa was formed, which worked in parallel with the United Cricket Board of South Africa. CSA was responsible for the development of professional cricket in the country, and UCB was responsible for amateur cricket. As a result, six years later, changes took place in the tax legislation, and in 2008 UCB was joined to the CSA.
Issues Cricket South Africa deals with:
- Regulation of domestic and international championships.
- Development of new formats and innovations.
- Development of provincial men’s and women’s cricket in different age categories.
- Supervising the young talent development program.
- Promotion and popularization of cricket in South Africa.
- Opening of sports sections and cricket schools.
- Implementation of activities that are based on the provisions of inclusiveness and non-discrimination.
- Holding festivals and themed events dedicated to cricket.
The main mission of Cricket South Africa is to make sure that cricket is supported by the majority of South Africans, and also that this sport is accessible to everyone who wants to play it. The organization operates a rule of racial quotas. For example, each national team should have six players of color in the main squad, two of whom are black Africans.
In 2021, the proportion of black Africans in the South African cricket team was approximately 27%. For comparison, a year ago it was 18%.
