SA20

The development of cricket in different countries is the number one goal for the International Cricket Council. That is why she tries to support many ideas for creating new championships. For example, a tournament called SA20 was recently launched in South Africa. We will tell you more about its concept in our note.

SA20: the history of the league

The new SA20 Cricket League was first held in South Africa on January 10th, 2023. It was created to delight local and foreign cricket fans with its dynamic game and attract a new audience to this fascinating sport.

However, before the SA20 was launched, 6 years had passed since all the stars could converge. In fact, no matter what noble goals the league organizers pursue to popularize cricket, it is simply impossible to launch the championship without third-party sponsorship. In addition, we have to solve many other organizational issues that may fail in the process. But we will tell you about this later.

Cricket South Africa established the T20 Global League franchise back in 2017. Yes, it is the predecessor of the SA20 league. However, the first season was postponed for a year due to the lack of a broadcast contract and a title sponsor.

In 2018, we decided to hold the Mzansi Super League. The championship was. Six CSA-owned teams took part in it. However, he also failed. And in 2020 and 2021, the game season did not take place at all due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

And finally, in 2022, SA20 was created with the support of Cricket South Africa and Africa Cricket Development (Pty) Limited (ACD).

SA20: how is the tournament going

The SA20 League lasts 4 weeks. It consists of 33 matches and 6 international franchises (that is, 6 teams belong to the owners of the Indian Premier League franchises), in which 102 world-class players, both local and international, take part.

A total of 6 teams play in the championship:

Initially, they perform each other twice in a round-robin system on the road and at home before reaching the semifinals and finals.

There are 17 people in each team. The players themselves in the group are purchased at auction for a fixed amount of R125 million. The squad can field up to four international players for the match. At the same time, 5 players can be signed before the auction:

  • 3 international players from different countries
  • 1 international player from South Africa
  • 1 player from South Africa without restrictions
