Sri Lanka Cricket: how cricket developed in Sri Lanka

Cricket was imported into Sri Lanka by the British because of the colonization of the island. It happened around the beginning of the 19th century. The primary match was in 1832 and called Colombo Cricket Club.

Of course, it should be understood that cricket was played mainly by European settlers throughout the 19th century, since, for example, in England this sport was already considered national, which, without exaggeration, absolutely everyone was fond of. But then gradually the locals became interested in cricket, which subsequently led to the development of national cricket and the formation of numerous stadiums, training bases and clubs.

The department was created in 1922, which organized the control of cricket, the predecessor of SLC – Ceylon Cricket Association. At that time, the land was called “Ceylon”, but a new constitution was adopted in 1972, and with it “Ceylon” was changed to “Sri Lanka”.

The primary first-class fight took place in February, in 1926. The home contest, the Daily News Trophy, appeared in Sri Lanka in 1937. Now it bears the name Premier Trophy.

The ICC granted Sri Lanka the rank of a full member of the organization on July 21, 1981, which opened up new horizons.

The Sri Lanka national club played for the first time in tests in 1982 against England, but Sri Lanka lost it.

The substantial notable triumph happened in 1996 when it became the winner of the cricket World Cup. Sri Lanka repeated the same success in 2014, winning the ICC World Twenty20.
