Now the team of this country is included in the ICC and participates in international tournaments at the highest level. The team’s nickname is “Men in Blue”, the players received it for the color of their uniforms.
The Calcutta Cricket Club was founded in 1792 – it happened almost a hundred years after the creation of the world’s first cricket club – Marylebone Cricket Club. So India can rightfully be considered the cradle of this game.
The Indians defeated the British for the first time on the cricket field in 1890, and a regular championship was established between the Parsis and the Europeans, which was named Presidency. In 1907, Hindus joined him, and a few years later, Muslims. Thanks to this tournament and other unofficial competitions, cricket became more and more popular in India.
The Team India joined the ICC as an independent national team in 1928.
- the ICC Cricket World Cup. India has been participating in this competition since its inception. Twice “Men in Blue” were able to take the cup and reach the final in 1983 and 2011, and once more, in 2003.
- the ICC T20 World Cup. The Indian cricket team won only 1 title in this tournament in 2007. The team lost to the Sri Lanka national team in the final of 2014.
- the ICC Champions Trophy. Participation in this tournament has already brought the Indians 2 titles: they shared the victory with the Sri Lanka national team in 2002, and they won the title, leaving all rivals behind in 2013. In addition, the Indian national team played in the final twice in this tournament: in 2000 (the New Zealand team inflicted the loss) and in 2017 (the Pakistani national team prevented the first place from taking the first place).
- the ACC Asia Cup. In this tournament, where only Asian countries have competed since 1984 (One Day and T20), India won 7 times (1984, 1988, 1990/91, 1995, 2010, 2016, 2018) and reached the final three more times (1997, 2004, 2008).
