The popular Uttar Pradesh Cricket Club was formed in 1934. The team represents the self-titled Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, with a population of 199 million people. Today, the team performs at three popular national championships: Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Home matches are played at the Green Park Stadium, with a capacity of 32,000 people. In addition, some matches of the Uttar Pradesh cricket team are played at the Ekana Cricket Stadium with a capacity of 50,000 people and at the Saifai International Cricket Stadium, which can accommodate 43,000 spectators. Throughout its history, the club has become a champion three times in various competitions (one victory at three playing tournaments). Read a short article about the best results of the cricket club.
Uttar Pradesh cricket team – the history of the first sports seasons
The team was formed in 1934 under the 1st name United Provinces. The club played under this name in tournaments until 1950. The team’s traditional colors are blue and white. Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) is the main sponsor and governing body of the club. This is a local company that began its work in 1928 and was called the United Provinces Cricket Team until 1950. It is responsible not only for the activities of the sports team, but also for all cricket in the state of Uttar Pradesh as a whole.
UPCA is a full member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Being on the Board gives the right to field a local team for domestic professional cricket tournaments. So, the Uttar Pradesh cricket team (we will always write this way) was able to participate in the Ranji Trophy for the first time in the 1934-1935 season.
In its debut season, the club was located in the Northern Zone. The club won the 1st match against the Delhi cricket team. Unfortunately, the team could not go further than the Southern Punjab cricket team (now just Punjab).
The best period before the club was renamed was the 1939-1940 season:
- In the 1st round of the Eastern Zone, the team won against Central India (now Madhya Pradesh);
- In the 2nd round, the club was stronger than the Bengal cricket team;
- In the semifinal, the team beat the Hyderabad cricket team;
- Finally, the players reached the final but lost it to the Maharashtra cricket team.
The 2nd place is a very good result for a developing team.
As already written, in 1950, the team changed its name. Under a different name in the 1950-1951 season, the club reached the 2nd round of the championship, losing it to the Madhya Pradesh cricket team.
The club adequately showed excellent cricket in 1978. Then the local team made it to the tournament’s final round for the 2nd time in history. However, in the 2nd final, the Uttar Pradesh cricket team was not lucky: the players lost it to the Karnataka cricket team.
Only after 20 years, the team entered the decisive round for the 3rd time. Unfortunately, the club did not achieve success in the 3rd final either: another loss from the Karnataka cricket team.
Three defeats turned into the 1st championship title in 2006. In the decisive meeting, the Uttar Pradesh cricket team dealt with the Bengal cricket team! Two years later, the team again made it to the final but lost it to the Delhi cricket team. The team really wanted to repeat the success of 2006 and 2009, where they also reached the final round. However, nothing happened here either. This time the club lost to the Mumbai cricket team.
To date, in the last season of the Ranji Trophy, the Uttar Pradesh cricket team has managed to take 4th place in Group B.
Uttar Pradesh cricket team – two championship wins
Since 1993, the team has been competing in another cricket tournament – the Ranji One Day Trophy. Its matches are held in a format with a limited number of overs (matches consist of 2 innings, 40-60 overs are played in each). For the first nine years, the tournament winners were five teams that took 1st place in 5 game groups. Players from Uttar Pradesh were able to become the best in the Central Zone in 1994 and 1996.
In 2002, the championship was renamed the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and it had playoff rounds. It turned out to take the championship title in 2005. But then it was not only the Uttar Pradesh club that won. The final ended in a draw, and the 2nd champion was Tamil Nadu cricket team.
In the 2005-2006 season, the club again reached the final, where it lost to the Railways cricket team. In the last season (2020-2021), the team also showed its skills and made it to the decisive round. Unfortunately, this time the players did not win and lost to the Mumbai cricket team.
The 3rd tournament in which the local team plays is called the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The championship was formed in 2006. Its matches are also held in a format with a limited number of overs, but unlike Vijay, only 20 overs are played here per inning.
A great season for the Uttar Pradesh cricket team turned out in 2014. Then the club made it to the final, which was lost to the Baroda cricket team. It turned out to win the championship trophy in 2016. The team took revenge and won the decisive match against the Baroda cricket team. In the last season (2020-2021), Uttar Pradesh competed in Group A, taking the penultimate 5th place.
Such recognizable players as:
- Ankit Rajpoot
- Priyam Garg
- Gopal Sharma
- Piyush Chawla
- Kuldeep Yadav
were able to play for the team at different times and are still playing.
Of course, there are other popular members of the team.
In general, the team shows decent results in all the country’s cricket competitions. Follow the future achievements of the club together with our website!
