Vidarbha cricket team – first-class results of the Ranji Trophy
The Vidarbha cricket team would not have been formed without a local sports company – Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA). It is the local governing body responsible for cricket activities in the Indian region of Vidarbha. The VCA has been part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India since 1956. Membership in the Council gives the Association the right to field a local cricket club in various professional tournaments organized by the BCCI. From that moment, the Vidarbha cricket team started participating in the Ranji Trophy tournament.
The Ranji Trophy is a first-class cricket championship that was formed in 1934. Here one game lasts 3-5 days. In their debut season (1957-1958), the players from Vidarbha were located in the Central Zone, where they did not win a single match. According to the championship results, the club took the last 4th place.
The first match the local team won in the 1959-1960 season. Then the club beat the Madhya Pradesh cricket team. For the first time, they managed to make it to the playoff round in 1971. The Vidarbha cricket team took 2nd place in the Central Zone and reached the 1/4 finals, where they lost to the Bengal cricket team.
A good season turned out in 2003 and 2012. Then the team was also able to make it to the 1/4 finals. Finally, a real holiday happened in 2018:
- The team took 1st place in Group D and reached the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy;
- In the 1/4 finals, the club beat the Kerala cricket team;
- In 1/2 finals, the team won against the Karnataka cricket team;
- And in the final, the club took the victory, defeating the Delhi cricket team.
This victory brought the 1st most crucial championship title for the Vidarbha cricket team.
The club continued to show skill the following year. The team entered the playoffs from 1st place in Group A and quickly reached the decisive match. In the final, the team beat the Saurashtra cricket team and won the 2nd title at the Ranji Trophy.
In addition, since 1960, an annual one-day tournament called the Irani Cup has been held in India. This is a first-class match played between the current Ranji Trophy champion and a team of the best players of the last season. Twice the local team came out as the winner!
Unfortunately, in the last season (2019-2020), the club could not make it to the playoffs. It took 5th place in Group A.
Vidarbha cricket team – games at other tournaments
Since 1993, another professional cricket tournament has been held in India – the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Until 2002, the championship was held without a playoff round and was called the Ranji One Day Trophy. Matches are played in a format with a limited number of overs. This means that only two innings of 40-60 overs are played in one game.
Over the last five years of the tournament, the team’s best achievement is considered to be reaching the 1/4 finals in the 2016-2017 season. Then the team lost in the 1st round to the Jharkhand cricket team in the playoffs. In the last season (2020-2021), which was held in a short format due to COVID-19, the club played in Group B, where it took the last 6th place.
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is another tournament held in a format with a limited number of overs. The championship was formed in 2006. One of the good seasons for the Vidarbha cricket team was 2018-2019. The club won the group stage and entered the Super League tournament. Here, the players from Vidarbha ended up in Group B, in which they took 3rd place out of 5 possible. In the last season, which was also held in a short format, the club played in Group D, where it took the last 6th place.
As you have noticed, the team can cause serious problems for many national clubs. Watch the upcoming triumphs of the Vidarbha cricket team with us!
