Odisha cricket team

The Odisha Cricket Club (until 2011, it was called Orissa) was formed in 1930 in the state of the same name with a population of 41.5 million people. The club received professional status in 1949. This gave it the right to compete in such popular domestic tournaments as Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Most of the home matches are played at the Barabati stadium, with a capacity of 48,000 people, but the club also has spare sports grounds. Unfortunately, for 72 years of participation in professional tournaments, the Odisha cricket team has not won a single championship title. In this article, we recall the team’s best performances, as well as the current players of the team.

Odisha cricket team – Association task

The sports team itself was founded in 1930. For the first 20 years, the club was an amateur team. It was only in the late 1940s that the state got its own local Odisha Cricket Association (OCA), the body responsible for all cricket activities in the state.

OCA has been a member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India since 1949. The Association is a full member of the Republican Council. This gives it the right to field a team at professional cricket tournaments organized by the BCCI.

In addition to managing the sports team, the Association plays a big role in the development of cricket in the state of Odisha. For what it’s worth to create a local championship – Odisha Premier League in the Twenty20 format. Amateur teams with completely different age categories participate in this championship. It is worth noting that the tournament is at a pretty good level.

There are also several sports stadiums under the protection of the Odisha Cricket Association. These are the main and spare venues for Odisha cricket team games:

  1. Stadium Barabati – Cuttack city;
  2. DRIEMS Ground – Cuttack City;
  3. East Coast Railway Stadium – Bhubaneswar City;
  4. Veer Surendra Sai Stadium – Sambalpur city.

After the Association was granted full status in 1949, the team participated in its debut season in the first-class Ranji Trophy championship.

Meghalaya cricket team – participation in professional tournaments

In the 1st season at the Ranji Trophy, the club played only one match. In the 1st round, the team lost to the Bihar cricket team. The first victory for the Odisha cricket team happened only in 1952. Then the team played in the Eastern Zone, where it dealt with the Assam cricket team in the 1st round. Unfortunately, the club could not go beyond the 1st round.

For the first time, the club made it past the group stage in 1984. Then the team entered the playoff round from the 2nd place of the Eastern Zone, where it played against the Rajasthan cricket team in the 1/4 final. Unfortunately, the players from Odisha could not go beyond this stage.

The last time the team reached the playoff stage was in the 2019-2020 season. The club played in Group C, where, according to the results of the main matches, it took 2nd place and reached the 1/4 finals of the Ranji Trophy. But this time, the team could not go any further. The match was lost to the future finalist of the championship – the Bengal cricket team.

The 2nd tournament in which the team competes is called the Vijay Hazare Trophy (a format with a limited number of overs). The championship at the professional level appeared in 1993. Until 2002, it did not have playoff rounds; all winners were determined in 5 game zones. So, in 2001 and 2002, the best players from Odisha were in the Eastern Zone.

The last significant success for the Odisha cricket team is considered to be the 2014-2015 season:

  • In the group stage, the club finished in 2nd place in the Eastern Zone and reached the playoff round;
  • In the 1/4 final, the team won against the Goa cricket team;
  • At the semi-final stage, the team lost to the Punjab cricket team.

In the 2020-2021 season, the Odisha club played games in Group C, in which it took 5th place out of 6.

Since 2006, the team has been playing in another tournament with a limited number of overs (matches in the form of Twenty20) called the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the 1st season, the club played in the Eastern Zone, where, according to the results of the championship, it took the last place. This happened in the last season at the moment – 2020-2021. The team took last place in Group B.

The club has been playing at popular tournaments in India for a long time. We believe that it is time to fully unleash your potential and perform worthily in the sports arenas of the country!
