The Central zone cricket team consists of players from 6 professional teams who play at the highest level in various national cricket tournaments. The club has six championship titles at the Duleep Trophy and five wins at the Deodhar Trophy in its history. The Board of Control for Cricket in India is responsible for the activities of the club. In this article, we introduce you to the team’s best players and the important victories of the club.

Central zone cricket team – participation in the Duleep Trophy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the national sports cricket board responsible for domestic professional cricket competitions. The Council was formed in 1928. The BCCI held the 1st first-class championship in 1934. Today it is called the Ranji Trophy.

After several decades, in order to maintain the popularity of cricket at a high level, the Council needed to come up with new tournaments. So, in the early 1960s, the idea arose to create another first-class championship, but with a different game form.

In 1961, the Duleep Trophy championship appeared. Until 2016, the tournament consisted of 5 playing zones (Central zone, East zone, North zone, South zone and West zone). Each zone is a team of players from a different number of professional teams representing different neighboring states and union states of India.

The Central zone cricket team consists of 6 first-class teams:

  1. Chhattisgarh cricket team;
  2. Madhya Pradesh cricket team;
  3. Railways cricket team;
  4. Rajasthan cricket team;
  5. Uttar Pradesh cricket team;
  6. Vidarbha cricket team.

Until 1993, the Duleep Trophy championship was held in the format of playoff matches. So, in the debut season, the Central zone team was able to reach the semifinals of the tournament. In the 1/4 final, the team won against the East zone, and in the 1/2 final, it lost to the future winner – the West zone team.

The club managed to reach the final game for the first time in the 1964-1964 season. Then, in the decisive match, the team lost to the West zone cricket team.

Finally, it was possible to become the champion of the first-class championship in 1972. The Central Indian team made it to the 1/4 finals of the North zone cricket team, then beat the South zone team in the 1/2 finals and was stronger than the West zone cricket team in the decisive match. Further, the results of the Central zone cricket team are as follows:

  • Loss in the final by West zone cricket team;
  • Loss in the final by North zone cricket team;
  • Loss in the final by South zone cricket team;
  • Loss in the final by North zone cricket team;

During this time, the Central zone cricket team won the championship five times: in 1977, in 1995, in 1999, in 2001 and in 2008. It is worth noting that in 2001, the final ended in a draw.
