Baroda cricket team – the beginning
Baroda is an Indian city with a population of 1.8 million people. The city is located in the state of Gujarat (the 5th largest in India). It was in the city of Baroda that an amateur cricket club was formed in 1930. At that time, there were no serious domestic cricket competitions in the country. The first professional tournament appeared only in 1934 under the name Ranji Trophy. It became the championship of first-class cricket; that is, one match of this championship was played for several days.
The cricketers from Baroda were striving to get to the main championship of the country soon. It happened in 1937. That year, the governing body for cricket, the Baroda Cricket Association, appeared in the city. The Association is a full member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). From that moment, the professional history of the team began.
The 1937-1938 Ranji Trophy season consisted of 16 teams, which were divided into 4 zones. The Baroda club was in the Western Zone. Unfortunately, the debut season did not work out at all: the team lost already in the 1st round to the Saurashtra team.
The success of the players came in 1943. The 9th season of the first-class championship was held. 13 professional teams took part in the tournament. Baroda cricket team was in the Western Zone. The club started its game from the 2nd round:
- 2nd round. Victory over the players from the Maharashtra cricket team;
- Round 3. Win against the Western India cricket team;
- Semi-final. Here the Baroda club easily dealt with the Rajasthan cricket team;
- The final. Finally, in the decisive match, the players won against the Hyderabad cricket team.
It was a very productive season. The debut championship title revealed the abilities of the local team, which has become a serious opponent for many successful clubs.
Baroda cricket team – participation in other competitions, club achievement
Three years later, the team from Baroda reached its 2nd final. Unfortunately, the club could not repeat the success. In the decisive match, he lost to a team called the Madhya Pradesh cricket team.
However, it all happened again for Baroda and Madhya Pradesh the following year. The two teams met again in the final match, but now the victory was for the players from the city of Baroda.
In general, the period of 1940-1950 became unique for Baroda. In 1949, the club again took 2nd place in the Ranji Trophy. In 1950, there was a 3rd championship victory. Then the team beat all the same players from Madhya Pradesh.
The last success before the big pause occurred in 1958. Baroda successfully passed all the stages of the group stage, and in the final, gave battle to the Services cricket team. This season brought the 4th trophy to the piggy bank of the cricket club. And then, for 43 years, the team did not see big victories. In 1993, a new format of cricket appeared in the country – one day (with a limited number of overs, matches of which last an average of 8 hours). In its entire history, the club has not won trophies here.
Finally, the team was restored at the beginning of the XXI century. The Baroda team won the tournament for the 5th time in 2001. In 2002, it took 2nd place. In the same year, the Ranji One Day Trophy was renamed as the Vijay Hazare Trophy. After nine years, the tournament had its final draws.
In 2006, the Baroda cricket team began participating in the 3rd domestic Cricket Championship – in short, Twenty20 format matches. The competition was called the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Having taken 2nd place in the first-class Ranji Trophy in 2011, the club became the winner of short matches a year later. In the final, he was stronger than the Punjab cricket team. It was possible to repeat the success in 2014. Then the players won against Uttar Pradesh.
Such famous players as Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan (older brother), Kiran More and Krunal Pandya were able to play for the club at different times.
Summing up the article, we can conclude that the Baroda cricket team is one of the most titled and famous Indian cricket clubs. We wish them good luck and other big victories.
