Munster Reds – History of the Local Sports Union

The Irish Cricket Union (Cricket Ireland) is the governing body of cricket in the country. It was founded in 1923. ICU became an associate member of the International Cricket Council in July 1993. After 24 years, the ICC introduced Ireland and Afghanistan as a full member of the International Union. Since then, countries under official status have hosted all the popular cricket tournaments in different formats.

The Munster Cricket Union is one of 5 local cricket companies that organizes and operates the sport in the province of Munster. The MCU was formed in 1956. The union promotes and develops cricket throughout the province. The company pays a lot of attention to the sports youth movement and creates conditions to support this expansion.

The MCU consists of 41 local cricket clubs. Their number is constantly increasing, which means that the Union is doing everything right, and cricket in this place is gaining popularity. However, the main problem today is the lack of stadiums and playgrounds.

Since 2018 Munster Cricket Union has signed a sponsorship agreement with All Rounder Cricket. Today ARC is considered one of the world’s leading marketers of sports cricket equipment. The store appeared on the market in 2011.

Also, one of the most important tasks of the MCU is to sponsor and promote the young professional cricket club Munster Reds. It has been representing the province at the most popular championships of the country since 2017.

Munster Reds – participation in domestic tournaments

The Inter-Provincial Series includes three cricket championships: IP Championship, IP Cup and IP Trophy. ICU formed the series in 2013. Initially, 3 clubs participated in all championships. 4 years after their founding, and the National Council admitted the 4th team, the Munster Reds, to the Inter-Provincial Trophy tournament.

The IP Trophy is a limited overs cricket championship with Twenty20 status (one match lasts about 3 hours, two innings of 20 overs played).

The 2017 season ran from May 26 to August 11. Each team played six matches per season. The games were played on a double round system (one home match – one away). The Munster Reds debuted against the Northern Knights. Unfortunately, the team lost the 1st match, like the 4th others. The only draw due to rain happened in the match against the North West Warriors. With such a game, the club finished the tournament in the last 4th place.

The Muster Reds team won their first draw only on July 6, 2018. The players beat the North West Warriors by six wickets. However, the club finished this season in last place in the standings. It should be admitted that at the moment this is the most successful season for the young team.

The last draw runs from June 18 to September 19. Now the championship will consist of 3 rounds, where six matches will be played in each. As of July 10, the Munster Reds have already won 2 games out of 6 played.

Munster Reds - participation in domestic tournaments

After the end of the 2018 season, there was talk among clubs that the ICU would admit the club to the 2nd Irish Championship – the IP Cup. This is a tournament that is held in a limited overs format in the List A statute. However, this did not happen. Fortunately, the debut took place, but only in May 2021. The Munster Reds finished the championship in 4th place with 3 losses, 2 draws and one win.

We believe that the club is still very young and all important victories are ahead of it! We are waiting for the team at the first-class Inter-Provincial Championship in the near future.
