Melbourne Renegades, representing the capital of the Australian state of Victoria, is a regular participant in the annual T20 competitions of the popular BBL cricket league. The team’s home venues are Marvel Stadium and Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium. The color of the form is black and red.

Melbourne Renegades: history

The first captain of the Melbourne team was all-rounder Andrew McDonald. In the opening season, they managed to win only two matches, but it was during this period that the team received players who later formed the core of the main squad – Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell and Brad Hodge, as well as guest stars Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq (both from Pakistan).

Soon, a well-thought-out personnel policy bore fruit, and already in the 2012-2013 season, Melbourne, having signed Peter Nevill and cricket legend Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka), ends the year on the first line of the standings. The team’s best bowler was recognized as a Sri Lankan who took 11 wickets (winning statistics – 88.89%).

For the next four seasons, Melbourne was noticeably stormy. The team was regularly replenished with new players (in particular, Chris Gayle, Brad Hogg and Sunil Narine joined it), but the game results did not allow it to qualify for the semifinals. However, it was during this period that the so-called Melbourne derby between Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars began to gain popularity. At the beginning of 2016, one of these games was attended by more than 80 thousand spectators.

Everything changed in the 2018-2019 season when the Melburnians won their first and so far only league trophy. However, they could not stay at the top of the table and later finished the year in the last place twice in a row, and therefore, disappointed fans even demanded that the team be transferred to the second division.

Melbourne Renegades: players

The current captain of the Melbourne Renegades is Aaron Finch. He led the team in the second season of the BBL and since then has been recognized as its best batsman four times. Despite his age, he is still one of the key players.

It is also worth highlighting the following representatives of Melbourne:

  1. Shaun Marsh, the son of the famous Australian cricketer Robert Marsh. He has represented the Australian national team since 2008. In addition, he spent more than ten seasons in the IPL, playing for Kings XI Punjab. One of the most experienced batsmen of the team.
  2. Imran Tahir. The career of the South African bowler of Pakistani origin is tending to decline, but he is determined to spend at least one more playing season at the usual high level.
  3. Mohammad Nabi. The Afghan all-rounder is considered one of the best in his role. He has represented the national team since 2008.
  4. Kane Richardson. This fast bowler has played for the Adelaide Strikers for several seasons, simultaneously trying his hand in India. Now he faces a difficult task to return to his previous positions after a long lockdown.

  • The best pair of batsmen are Mohammad Nabi and Dan Christian;
  • Kane Richardson took the most wickets (46).

Melbourne Renegades: statistics

Melbourne Renegades is not one of the most successful BBL teams, but it is definitely one of the most popular (in just three seasons, the total number of club members has more than doubled).
