Glenn Maxwell: Biography and Sporting Career

Glenn Maxwell, whose full name is Glenn James Maxwell, was born on October 14, 1988, in Kew, a respectable suburb of Melbourne. His father, Neil Maxwell, who had immigrated to Australia from England, was a passionate cricket fan and even played for local teams at an amateur level. Every day after classes at Mentone Secondary College, Glenn, under his father’s supervision, learned the basics of the game and spent hours polishing up his skills.

Glenn started out in elite sport at the local South Belgrave Cricket Club, whose training ground was literally a hundred metres from his home. Here is what former South Belgrave captain Daniel Cormack said about Glenn:

“He started his junior career at our club, and used to live across the road on Mt Morten Road. He played all of his junior seasons, and a few seasons in the seniors with South Belgrave, and basically dominated his whole career in our club”.

After coming through all the junior sides at South Belgrave Cricket Club, in 2006, at the age of 17, he received a scholarship from the Victorian Institute of Sport, which fast-tracked his move from junior cricket to the professional level. In the 2010/11 season, Maxwell was called up to the Victoria state team and immediately set a record in his debut ODI match against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield tournament, scoring 51 runs off 19 balls. After a standout season, Maxwell quickly broke through to the international stage: he made his ODI debut in 2012, his T20I debut in 2012, and his Test debut in 2013.

In subsequent years, the Australian cricketer proved to be excellent in T20, which could not fail to attract the attention of representatives of major leagues – in particular, the IPL. Apart from appearances for the Victoria State team, Glenn Maxwell managed to play for:

  • Melbourne Renegades (2011-2012).
  • Delhi Daredevils (2012).
  • Hampshire (2012, 2014).
  • Melbourne Stars (since 2012).
  • Mumbai Indians (2013).
  • Surrey (2013).
  • Kings XI Punjab (2014-2017, 2020).
  • Yorkshire (2015).
  • Delhi Daredevils (2018).
  • Lancashire (2019).
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore (2021).

We will not go through match scorecards or spell out the athlete’s entire brilliant career in detail. Instead, we will focus only on its biggest moments:

  • 2013: first major club trophy – IPL champion with Mumbai Indians;
  • 2014: IPL Player of the Tournament. Playing for Kings XI Punjab, he scored 552 runs and became the main sensation of the season, helping take the team all the way to the final;
  • 2015: ICC Cricket World Cup champion. Maxwell was a key player for Australia and smashed the fastest World Cup century by an Australian;
  • 2015: named Australia’s T20I Player of the Year;
  • 2017: first of four Sheffield Shield titles, Australia’s main domestic trophy, with Victoria;
  • 2019: became the second Australian in history to score three centuries in T20I cricket;
  • 2021: ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champion. Glenn made a decisive contribution in the final against New Zealand, putting crucial runs on the board alongside Mitchell Marsh;
  • 2023: ICC World Test Championship winner with the national team;
  • 2023: second ICC Cricket World Cup title. Became the first Australian to score a double century, 201*, in an ODI match;
  • 2024: Major League Cricket champion with Washington Freedom. Drew level with Rohit Sharma for the most T20I centuries scored, with five.

The athlete also owns numerous individual awards and has repeatedly been named in the ICC Team of the Year in both ODI and T20I formats.

After Australia’s disappointing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, the sports press actively discussed whether that tournament would be the final “T20 World Cup” of Maxwell’s career, given his age. However, his form in subsequent matches for Hyderabad Kingsmen in the PSL showed that he was still in excellent shape. In April 2026, for example, he put on a brilliant performance against Rawalpindiz in the PSL, scoring 70 runs and picking up one wicket.

At the moment, Maxwell has officially retired only from ODI cricket, while continuing to play in T20. What is more, the athlete is firmly targeting the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the home World Cup in 2028, even though he will already be 40 by then.
