The Madhya Pradesh cricket club was formed in 1950 in the state of the same name. The team takes part in 3 internal professional competitions: the Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Currently, the team’s best achievement is considered to have reached the final of the Ranji Trophy in 1999. Players from Madhya Pradesh play home games at Holkar Stadium with a capacity of 30,000. In addition, the club also has a 2nd playground – Captain Roop Singh Stadium. It can accommodate 18,000 people. This review will tell about the club’s background since the Madhya Pradesh consists of parts of 2 professional teams.
Madhya Pradesh cricket team – 1st team history
Madhya Pradesh State is the administrative body of a part of Central India. The Holkar cricket club was originally formed in this area in 1934. In the same year, the team became one of the initiators of the first-class cricket championship – the Ranji Trophy.
For the first few years, the collective performed under the name Central India. The club ended its debut season in the semi-finals of the playoffs, losing to Northern India. The Holkar reached his 1st final in 1945 but lost it to the players from the Bombay cricket team (now the Mumbai cricket team). Over the next ten years, the Holkar cricket team has shown real professionalism. See for yourself:
- 1945. 2nd place in the Ranji Trophy;
- 1946. Winning the final over the Baroda cricket team;
- 1947. 2nd place. Loss in the final from the Baroda cricket team;
- 1948. Second champion title. Defeat the Bombay cricket team;
- 1950. Loss in the final from the Baroda cricket team;
- 1951. 3rd decisive victory in the final over the Gujarat cricket team;
- 1952. Final loss from Bombay cricket team;
- 1953. 4th title in the Ranji Trophy. Winning the final over the Bengal cricket team;
- 1954. Another 2nd place. Final loss from the Bombay cricket team;
- 1955. Loss in the final from the Madras cricket team (now Tamil Nadu cricket team).
1955 was the last year for the Holkar cricket team. The club was then disbanded and replaced by the Madhya Bharat team. And this group became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956.
Madhya Pradesh cricket team – a team from the 1950s
It is already known that the cricket club was formed in 1950. In the debut season at the Ranji Trophy, the team did not go beyond the 1st round (lost to the Hyderabad team). In 1956, the renamed Madhya Bharat team joined him.
Responsible for state cricket activities – the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA). In general, the local Association was formed in 1940 under the name Holkar Cricket Association. It has been bearing its modern name since 1956. The MPCA is a full member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (in fact, thanks to this, the sports team plays first-class cricket).
For the period of history since 1956, the club could not win championship titles. The only significant result at the Ranji Trophy was the 1999 finals. Then the team lost to the Karnataka cricket team in the final. The club finished the last season (2019-2020) in 9th place in Group B.
In addition to first-class cricket, the Madhya Pradesh cricket team has been participating in one-day matches with a limited number of overs since 1993. Until 2002, the championship was held without a playoff stage (there were just 5 playing zones where the best team was determined in each). The players from Madhya Pradesh became the best six times for 9 years. In 2021, in the last season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (also renamed in 2002), the club took 4th place in Group B.
In 2006, another professional cricket championship appeared in India – the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Unfortunately, the Madhya Pradesh cricket team did not show great results at this tournament either. The club last finished 2nd in Group D.
At different times, the team played and played such famous players as:
- Rajesh Chauhan;
- Naman Ojha;
- Chandrakant Pandit;
- Jalaj Saxena;
- Ishwar Pandey.
We hope that the Madhya Pradesh will soon show itself and win the 1st championship title in any professional tournament.
