Bangladesh national cricket team: main achievements

The fans have called the players of the team “tigers” for many years; they enter the field in green and red uniforms, which repeats the colors of the flag of Bangladesh. The national team of this country became a member of the ICC in 1977, and already in 1979 took part in the first ICC tournament (ICC Trophy), defeating Fiji and Malaysia. The first One Day Cricket match for the national team took place in 1986 against Pakistan and, unfortunately, ended in a loss.

The first Test match took place only in 2000. They played against the Indian national team and also ended in defeat. The first victory in this type of cricket came to the team in 2005 in a match against the Zimbabwe national team. A little later, the first T20I match for Bangladesh was in 2006. The Tigers emerged victorious from this confrontation.

The Bangladesh national cricket team is now one of the youngest teams in international competition. All significant victories are still ahead of them.

  • the ICC Cricket World Cup. Bangladesh has taken part in 6 cup competitions so far, from 1999 to 2019. The biggest achievement was reaching the quarterfinals in 2015.
  • the ICC Champions Trophy. The Tigers have played this championship seven times but have not yet won a single title. At that moment, within the framework of this tournament, the team had only two victories.
  • ICC T20 World Cup. The Bangladesh national team took part in the cup 6 times, played 25 matches and won 5 of them. The team’s best result so far is the passage to the second round (2007, 2014 and 2016).

One of the significant achievements of the Bangladesh national cricket team is the victory in the ICC Trophy in 1997. This tournament was the qualification for participation in the Cricket World Cup.

Cricket now surpasses football in popularity in Bangladesh, so it can be predicted that the national team will take its toll on the international level in the future.
