Punjab Kings cricket team

The Punjab Kings is the new name in the IPL Indian Premier League. From its inception until February 2021, this team was called the Kings XI Punjab. The club from Mohali achieved the best result in the debut season of the Indian Premier League IPL, finishing third. The head coach of Punjab Kings since 2020 is local specialist Anil Kumble. He is considered one of the greatest bowlers in the history of world cricket.

Punjab Kings: history of creation and first results

The Punjab Kings franchise belongs to four shareholders at once. The largest share (46%) belongs to Mohit Burman from the Dabur company. 23% of the shares are assigned to Ness Wadia (Wadia group’s), 23% are also owned by Preity Zinta and Saptarshi Dey (the Dey & Dey Group). For the acquisition of the franchise, the owners jointly paid $ 76 million.

In 2010, after a dispute between the first head of the Indian Premier League Lalit Modi and the Board of Control for Cricket in India, it was decided to expel two teams from the league – the Kings XI Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals. The clubs did not agree with the decision. At first, they tried to challenge the decision without outside interference. When that failed, the teams filed lawsuits. In particular, the Punjab Kings case was heard in the Mumbai Supreme Court. The court ruled in the team’s favor, annulling its expulsion from the Indian Premier League IPL.

The team name change to Punjab Kings, according to Ness Wadia, was planned even earlier but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is associated with the desire to start a new history of the club.

Before their debut season in the Indian Premier League, IPL, the Punjab Kings managed to gather a good roster of players. The start of the championship for the team turned out to be unstable, but then she won nine out of ten matches. These results put him in third place in the regular season. In the first playoff match, the club from Mumbai lost to the Chennai Super Kings in a bitter struggle.

Punjab Kings: home stadium

The team’s base is PCA Stadium, which is located in Mohali. Among the fans, the sports complex is also known as the Mohali Stadium. This stadium stands out from the rest in that it has low-light poles. This circumstance was taken into account during the construction since the Chandigarh airport is located nearby. Airplanes flying over PCA Stadium cannot gain high altitude to avoid the risks of collisions with lamp posts accurately. At the same time, experts and cricketers are praising the stadium lawn. Players can see the ball well and can carry out successful attacks on it.

The stands of the PCA Stadium, which is owned by the Punjab Cricket Association, can seat 26,950 spectators. Previously, the Punjab Kings held some home meetings in other cities – Dharamsala and Indore.

Punjab Kings: performance history

After finishing third in 2008, the Mohali team made only one playoff in the Indian Premier League, IPL. It happened in 2014. Then Glenn Maxwell shone in the ranks of the Punjab Kings. Thanks to his efforts and team interactions, Red (the team’s main color) managed to take first place in the group stage with 11 victories and only three losses. The team faced the Kolkata Knight Riders in the first playoff match, losing 28 runs. Red used the second chance to reach the final more effectively, beating the Chennai Super Kings with almost the same score. Another encounter with the Kolkata Knight Riders was very persistent. Until the last minutes, it was impossible to name the winner, but in the end, with a difference of three wickets, the opponent turned out to be better. However, winning the silver medals was seen as a great achievement in the ranks of the Punjab Kings.

The rest of the time, the Punjab Kings performed with varying degrees of success:

  • In 2009, 2011 and 2017, the team stopped short of making the playoffs. The most offensive was to take fifth place in 2009. Red scored the same number of points with the Deccan Chargers, but the opponent went further in terms of additional indicators. Note that in the end, the Deccan Chargers became the champion of the tournament.
  • Sixth place was taken by the Mohali club in 2012, 2013, 2019 and 2020. Before the 2020 season, the composition of the team has seriously changed. So, Glenn Maxwell returned to the roster. Red spent a lot of money on the transition to them Ravichandran Ashwin. Kannur Lokesh Rahul became the team captain. The Mohali club started the season with a victory in a stubborn match with the Delhi Capitals, but they lost more often in the next matches. So, the Punjab Kings suffered five defeats in a row at one time. Such results did not allow to rise above sixth place in the standings.
  • In 2018, the Punjab Kings finished seventh in the group stage. The team spent the worst seasons in 2010, 2015 and 2016. Then she rounded out the standings of the Indian Premier League IPL.
