Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant - Wicket-keeper
Rishabh Pant is an Indian professional cricketer, a wicketkeeper-batter. He is the most expensive player ever bought in the history of IPL auctions. Clubs are ready to splash out record-breaking sums for his bright, attacking and, most importantly, effective game – the kind of cricket that brings wins. As part of the Indian national team, Pant has already picked up plenty of global honours, including gold at the T20 World Cup 2024, the Champions Trophy 2025, and two Border-Gavaskar Trophy titles. In this short piece, with a reading time of about five minutes, we have tried to give a concise yet informative look at this outstanding athlete and his achievements.
Rishabh Pant: Biography and Sporting Career
Rishabh Pant, whose full name is Rishabh Rajendra Pant, was born on October 4, 1997, in Roorkee, a small town by Indian standards, in the state of Uttarakhand. Rishabh and his family belong to the Brahmins, the highest varna, or social class, in traditional Indian society. The athlete’s father, Rajendra Pant, ran a small private school, Macaulay Public School, and was a passionate cricket fan. After noticing that his son had been interested in the game from an early age, Rajendra became his first mentor and did everything he could to develop his sporting talent.
For the sake of the child’s big dream, the family took a serious step: when Rishabh was only 12 years old, they left their old life behind and moved to Delhi. The sacrifice paid off. At the capital’s Sonnet Club, the future athlete came under the guidance of the great coach Tarak Sinha, who shaped his aggressive playing style.
“I played a lot of my early cricket in Haridwar and Dehradun. But I just had to come to Delhi if I had to make a career out of it. […] As for the grind, if you don’t struggle, you’ll never value success. And it’s always better to struggle early in life than later on.” These words from the athlete were quoted by the Indian online portal and news website Rediff.com.
A strict daily routine – morning training sessions at Sonnet, school attendance, and additional evening work on technique and stamina – eventually paid off. Having worked his way up from local youth clubs, Rishabh broke through to the level of national age-group tournaments. In particular, at the Cooch Behar Trophy for under-19 players, he delivered an outstanding performance, which led to his inclusion in India’s squad for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2016.
His successful performance at that tournament, especially scoring 50 runs off 18 balls against Nepal, helped Pant establish himself within India’s national cricket system and sped up his move into the professional game. India reached the final of that competition, where they lost to the West Indies.
He did not have to wait long. In February 2017, the 19-year-old made his debut for the national team in a T20I against England. On August 18, 2018, he stepped onto the field for the first time in Test cricket – at the same Trent Bridge, against the same English side. Two months later, on October 21, 2018, he made his ODI debut against the West Indies.
You could talk about Rishabh Pant’s sporting career for a long time – there would be enough material for a whole book. But we will focus only on its key moments and will not push the reader’s patience too far:
- 2018: ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award; at the time, the youngest player to score 1,000 runs in the IPL;
- 2019: included in India’s squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup; named the ICC Rising Star of the Squad;
- 2020: IPL finalist with Delhi Capitals (DC), marking the club’s first-ever appearance in the final;
- 2021: officially became captain of the Delhi Capitals franchise; won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award and the ESPNcricinfo Test Batting Award;
- 2022: appointed captain of India’s T20I team;
- 2024: winner of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 with the Indian national team;
- 2025: member of the ICC Champions Trophy-winning team; winner of the Laureus World Comeback of the Year award; the most expensive player in IPL auction history.
An attentive reader will notice a two-year gap in the timeline of his achievements. The reason was a horrific car crash and the difficult rehabilitation period that followed. The accident happened early in the morning on December 30, 2022: Pant was driving home to surprise his mother, but lost control of the car. The collision with a road divider, or barrier, had serious consequences: lacerations, a concussion, and a complicated knee injury that required emergency hospitalisation and surgery.
Against many pessimistic predictions, Rishabh Pant officially returned to the field in the spring of 2024. However, his form still left a lot to be desired. After two poor IPL seasons, Pant asked the DC management to relieve him of the captaincy. At the same time, Rishabh lost the vice-captaincy of India’s Test side and dropped out of the ODI squad. Right now, the athlete is focused on getting back to his best and is preparing for the series against Afghanistan, which is set to begin very soon, in June 2026.
