Jamaica Tallawahs

The Jamaica Tallawahs (also known as the Fi Wi Tallawahs) is one of the six franchise teams in the Caribbean Premier League, established in 2013. The home venue is Sabina Park in Kingston, with a capacity of 20 thousand spectators. The uniform’s colors are green, black and yellow.

The Jamaica Tallawahs have won the CPL twice, including the opening draw. The team boasts several landmark records, in particular:

  1. The Jamaicans have won five home games out of six since the end of the 2014 season;
  2. They became the only team in the league’s history that fielded 11 players of local origin for the match (2013, a match against TT Red Steel).

One of the team’s shareholders is the Hollywood actor of Scottish origin Gerard Butler, who played Tsar Leonid in the film “300 Spartans”.

In the first draw of the league, Jamaica started with a defeat, losing away to Guyana Amazon Warriors. However, the team subsequently managed to pick up speed, winning five matches consecutively. The only ones who were able to impose a fight on them on the way to the playoff stage were the same Guyana Amazon Warriors, who beat the competitors by five runs. In the final, where the teams faced off once again, the Jamaicans were stronger again, having an advantage of seven wickets.

A year later, the Jamaica Tallawahs were very close to defending the title: having easily made it to the playoffs, they beat the Trinbago Knight Riders (not least through the efforts of Andre Russell, who was recognized as the player of the match), but in the decisive battle for a ticket to the finals they lost to their principal rivals from Guyana. The trend continued in the next season: in total, the Jamaicans fell behind the Guyana Amazon Warriors by 84 runs and were unable to compete for a place in the finals, finishing the season on the 4th line.

Jamaica Tallawahs history

2016 became a year of a triumphant return for the Jamaica Tallawahs. The team almost did not allow mistakes in the group stage, having lost only once to the Guyanese away and losing on the road and at home to St Lucia Zouks, after which it passed into the playoffs. In the final, where the Jamaicans faced Guyana Amazon Warriors, they managed to form a solid nine-wicket advantage, and the all-rounder of the winners, Imad Wasim, was recognized as the best player of the match. Another all-rounder, Andre Russell, won the award as the best cricketer of the draw.

The following season, the team’s results began to decline, and in 2019, it finished at the last line of the standings. Having thoroughly updated the squad but retaining key players (Chadwick Walton, Andre Russell, Glenn Phillips), the Jamaicans began gradually returning to the top. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic made adjustments to their plans, because of which the Jamaica Tallawahs had to urgently look for a replacement for those who left. So Mujeeb al Rahman, Jermaine Blackwood and Ramaal Lewis joined the team. Despite a rather low percentage of wins, the Jamaicans were able to make it to the playoffs, where, however, they lost to the Trinbago Knight Riders, ending the season on the fourth line.
