IPL 2027 Auction
The BCCI has revealed the first details of the Indian Premier League’s 2027 auction, which will take place in Goa, India, in mid-December. After three years overseas, the IPL 2027 auction is heading back home. There is still plenty of work ahead for the organisers, though, with further details about the event to be announced at a later date.
IPL 2027 Auction Returns to India
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that Goa will host the auction. Details about the annual event remain limited for now, but its return to India is significant news. The previous three auctions were held in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi hosting the events. India last staged the auction four years ago in Kochi. The auction ahead of the 2027 IPL season is expected to take place in mid-December. As usual, franchises will look to strengthen their squads for the upcoming campaign, bidding to secure the best players available.
December’s auction will be the last in the 2025-2027 three-year cycle. That means a mega auction will follow ahead of the 2028 season, paving the way for major squad reshuffles as franchises prepare for the next cycle, running from 2028 to 2030.
The 2027 Indian Premier League season was originally scheduled to run from March 14 to May 30. However, those plans now appear likely to change. Following the latest BCCI meeting, Saikia said the IPL season would most likely get underway in late March. The dates have yet to be confirmed.
Over the coming weeks, franchises will need to decide which players they want to keep. Before the auction, teams must meet a retention deadline: the final date for confirming which members of their current squads will stay on. An exact date has not yet been announced, but the deadline is expected to fall in late November.
The auction is not the only opportunity for teams to reshape their squads, as franchises can also trade players with one another. The latest such deal involved Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants: Rishabh Pant returned to DC, while Kuldeep Yadav moved in the opposite direction, joining the Super Giants as part of the exchange.
How the IPL 2027 Auction Will Work
The auction will follow the familiar format used each year. The league’s ten franchises will compete to sign available players, looking to fill gaps and add quality to their squads ahead of the new season. Here is a reminder of the IPL 2027 auction rules:
- Each franchise has a limited budget to spend on players. Teams therefore head into the auction with a clear idea of their targets and how much they are willing to pay for them.
- Every player entering the auction selects a base price from eight available brackets, ranging from ₹20 lakh to ₹2 crore. Bidding opens at that base price, with interested franchises raising their offers as they battle to secure the player’s signature.
- Players are divided into groups according to their roles, including batters, bowlers, wicket-keepers and all-rounders. They are also categorised as Indian or overseas players.
- Players who go unsold will not take part in the IPL season unless they are picked up when their names come back up in the accelerated round of bidding.
One of the most enticing names on the transfer market is Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya. Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings are both rumoured to be interested in signing him. Other players expected to attract competitive bidding include Shreyas Iyer, Cameron Green, Ravi Bishnoi, Mitchell Starc, Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma.
Rishabh Pant holds the record as the most expensive player in IPL history, having been bought by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore ($2.82 million) in 2025. Cameron Green became the league’s most expensive overseas signing when Kolkata Knight Riders splashed out ₹25.2 crore ($2.6 million) on the Australian ahead of the 2026 season.
