Barbados national cricket team: how cricket developed in Barbados

Presumably, cricket in Barbados began to be played around the end of the 18th century. Such assumptions are associated with a historical find on the banks of the Tweed River in 1979. It was the Barbados Cricket Buckle. The buckle depicted a cricketer with a bat in his hand, with a chain collar visible on his neck, making it clear that the man is a slave. The discovered item also depicts huts where slaves lived in the background and a windmill. This find made it possible to establish that the thing could have been made in the period from 1780 to 1810.

According to historians, the first mention of cricket in Barbados dates back to 1806, when some of the West Indies were colonized by Europeans. The slaves who were freed started playing cricket in the mid-18th century, and there is evidence that plantation owners encouraged their slaves to cricket.

In 1865, the Barbados national cricket team played first-class cricket in the West Indies for the first time. The team won the match.

The Inter-Colonial Cricket Tournament was created in 1891. Initially, the competition was held every two seasons until 1908, and then until 1939 every year. In total, 28 championships have been held since the foundation of the tournament, 11 of which the Barbados national cricket team won.

At the moment, the Barbados national cricket team competes in competitions such as the Regional Four Day Competition and the Regional Super50. The team at the championships is called Barbados Pride.
