The Rangpur Rangers, also known informally as the Rangers of The North, is a professional T20 cricket team serving in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Most matches take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The color of the form is sky-blue.
Rangpur Rangers: history
The Rangpur joined the league shortly before the first radical update in 2013. And although all subsequent innovations could not but affect the team, it retained the original structure and most of the composition and professional management (the general sponsor of the Rangpur is the country’s largest pharmaceutical company Incepta Pharmaceuticals).
The team debuted as the Rangpur Riders in 2013, becoming the seventh member of the league. The rights to the franchise were bought by the owner of the iSports Limited Mustafa Rafiqul Islam, who interrupted the offer of Haque Brothers Industries Limited (the deal was worth just over a million dollars).
The first A + player and also the highest-paid Rangpur cricketer was Nasir Hussain, the position of captain was offered to Abdur Razzak. The legendary Saqlain Mushtaq took over to coach the team, and it was not unsuccessful: the Rangpur started with a victory over the Chittagong, bypassing them by 6 wickets. However, the results began to decline in the future: stopping at the playoff stage, the team finished on the fifth line of the standings.
The Rangpur approached the next season more thoroughly, changing the coach and renewing the roster. So, Shane Jurgensen took the place of the team’s mentor, and Shakib Al Hasan became the player of A +. In addition, the ranks of the Rangpur were joined by Arafat Sunny, Soumya Sarkar, Saqlain Sajib and a number of others, including Mohammad Nabi and Darren Sammy. Thanks to a well-thought-out personnel policy, the Rangpur not only reached the playoffs but was also able to compete for a place in the final, although he lost to the Barisal Bulls.
Despite the successes achieved, the Rangpur failed to consolidate them. On the one hand, their results could not be affected by the sponsor change (the Sohana Sports became it). In addition, the team was thoroughly changed again: Shakib Al Hasan left for the Dhaka Dynamites, so he had to look for a replacement urgently. All-rounder Dasun Shanaka, bowler Rubel Hossain, and experienced batsman Ziaur Rahman joined the team’s ranks; the Rangpur managed to keep Mohammad Mithun and Arafat Sunny with a series of brilliant results. However, the raw squad could not impose the fight for the title on stronger opponents and ended the year in the league stage without reaching the playoffs.
The following year, Rangpur’s A + player changes again: the place of Soumya Sarkar was taken by Mashrafe Mortaza, who is also entrusted with the position of captain. The team includes Chris Gale, Brandon McCallum and Lasith Malinga, as well as Ravi Bopara and David Willey. Management manages to keep Rubel Hossain, Sohag Gazi and several other players by signing Shahriar Nafees, an outstanding local batsman, during the draft.
Starting off with a victory over the Rajshahi, the team moved along the grid rather unevenly but managed to reach the qualifying stage, winning both key matches and overturning the Dhakians in the final. Chris Gale and Mashrafe Morteza played an important role in the design of the first title in the history of Rangpur.
The Rangpur people did not manage to repeat this success in the future. Having signed several players in the draft (Shafiul Islam, Abul Hasan, Sohag Gazi and others), they reached the playoffs but could not compete for the second title. Later, Mashrafeh Morteza and Shakib Al Hasan left the team, which could not but affect Rangpur’s performances: they fell back to the sixth line of the standings last season.
