Glenn Maxwell - Australian All-rounder

Glenn Maxwell (Glenn James Maxwell) was born on October 14, 1988 in Kew, Australia. He played for the Australia National Cricket Team in T20 and ODI, also defended the national team’s colors in test competitions.

A distinctive feature of Maxwell’s playstyle is his penchant for improvisation and theatricality, which pays off very well in abbreviated formats. Nevertheless, in test matches, the player is also quite effective, as evidenced by his statistics: in particular, Glenn Maxwell is among the 13 cricketers who have completed a hundred in all three formats (in Australia, only Shane Watson was able to do this).

As a junior, Glenn Maxwell competed for the South Belgrave CC. During this period, the playstyle of the future cricket star was formed: starting with the classics, he stopped at the position of the off-spin bowler in the end. Soon, Victoria’s breeders paid attention to Glenn and invited him to join the team of his native state. A season later, he took part in the the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes and was recognized as the best player in the drawing.

In the same year, the young debutant managed to excel at the Emerging Players Tournament. Having stepped onto the pitch for the first time in a Victoria t-shirt, Glenn Maxwell made a good impression on the public and designed the fastest fifty in the history of Australian ODI competitions.

Glenn Maxwell: playing career

Glenn Maxwell had two outstanding seasons, continuing to play on several fronts at once, but the busy schedule affected the player – the player was injured. After a forced pause, he decides to change the situation and goes to England to join the amateur team South Wilts and then the Hampshire Second XI. After a series of successful performances, Glenn Maxwell returned home, where he continued to defend the colors of Victoria. He temporarily fell out of the main team in the 2015-2016 season, which greatly surprised one of the main breeders of the test team, Mark Waugh:

He has to play… From an Australian point of view, his form is optimal for participation in test matches. We probably need to ask Victoria’s representatives why he left him out… This is unlikely to be related to the game because he simply has to be in the team.

In subsequent years, the Australian cricketer proved to be excellent in T20, which could not fail to attract the attention of representatives of major leagues – in particular, the IPL. Apart from appearances for the Victoria State team, Glenn Maxwell managed to play for:

  • Melbourne Renegades (2011-2012).
  • Delhi Daredevils (2012).
  • Hampshire (2012, 2014).
  • Melbourne Stars (since 2012).
  • Mumbai Indians (2013).
  • Surrey (2013).
  • Kings XI Punjab (2014-2017, 2020).
  • Yorkshire (2015).
  • Delhi Daredevils (2018).
  • Lancashire (2019).
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore (2021).

Glenn Maxwell: performing internationally

Glenn Maxwell made his international debut in 2012, playing ODI matches against Afghanistan and Pakistan. In the same season, a promising all-rounder was included in the team at the ICC World Twenty20, but Glenn failed to shine there: the Australians did not easily reach the semifinals, where they lost to the West Indies.

Nevertheless, the gifted athlete soon managed to consolidate his position in the national team. Replacing the injured John Holland, he shows good results against Sri Lanka, after which he receives an invitation to the test team, which just lost Shane Watson.

However, Glenn Maxwell made his full test debut in the 2013 season. The player received an invitation to the team, despite his form raising doubts from the headquarters. However, the head coach of the Australians Mickey Arthur praised the ward, and Maxwell himself assured:

I’ve worked a lot on my technique in recent years. I played really well in the Sheffield Shield … I think if I get a chance to play in test matches, it will give me confidence.

However, in the first matches, Glenn Maxwell showed himself not convincing enough and was soon replaced. In part, he managed to rehabilitate himself at ODI, where Australia defeated England, and at the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, following which he finished second in wounds. For the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, Glenn again held several local records, but is inferior to Steve Smith and David Warner in the number of runs. At the end of the year, the Australian receives the “Best T20I Player” award.

The 2016 season did not bring much success to Glenn Maxwell. The only exception is the victorious Tri-nation series, where Australia managed to defeat the West Indies, but the player himself was criticized for the lack of serious results.

Despite the fact that Glenn Maxwell was left out of the test team the following year, successful performances in ODI again earned him the title of player of the year. In 2017, he finally waited for the cherished chance to represent the country in test competitions again and even set a significant record, issuing his first hundred at this level. However, he was soon pushed aside by Sean Marsh, and then the coaching staff, dissatisfied with Maxwell’s instability, expressed doubts that he could gain a foothold in the test team. However, Cricket Australia has expressed unequivocal support for Glenn by offering a full contract for the 2018-2019 season. Later, he was included in the national team’s application for the Cricket World Cup.
