Dawid Malan is an international-level English cricketer and a top-order batter. A former England international, he was also part of the England side that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. He is a two-time The Hundred champion, having lifted the title with Trent Rockets (2022) and Oval Invincibles (2024). One of the most prominent English cricketers of the last decade, Malan held the status of the No. 1 batter in the ICC T20I rankings for a long stretch.

Dawid Malan: Biography and Sporting Career

Dawid Malan (full name: Dawid Johannes Malan Jnr) was born on 3 September 1987 in Roehampton, a suburb of London. The future cricketer’s development was shaped by a unique blend of sporting and cultural traditions from two continents: his father was South African by birth and had played club cricket, while his mother was English. Dawid’s brother, Charl, and sister, Line, also enjoyed success in sport: Charl was once part of the local Teddington cricket club, while Line represented the England women’s field hockey team.

According to the player himself, as quoted by the web edition of the well-known South African publication Who’s Who of Southern Africa, it was his family environment that played a major role in shaping his career choice:

“Cricket has always been in the family, it was my father’s main sport that he played, lived and breathed and so I was always around it growing up. Watching it at home, being coached by him… it was easy to fall in love with a sport that was such a big part of your family life.”

In 1994, the future player’s family decided to return to his father’s South African roots. After moving to the picturesque wine town of Paarl, around 60 km from Cape Town, South Africa, eight-year-old Dawid enrolled at one of the country’s leading sporting institutions, the prestigious Paarl Boys’ High School. It was there that Malan, under the guidance of Gary Kirstez, a former South Africa international who later coached both India and South Africa, built a rock-solid technical base. As a teenager, Dawid was already playing for the youth teams of Boland in the Western Cape.

After finishing school in 2006, Dawid Malan decided to continue his cricket career in England. Having earned a place in the main English talent-development program, MCC Young Cricketers, he joined Middlesex the same year, first playing for the second team before breaking into the senior side. In the 2007 season, Dawid was the top run-scorer in the Second XI Championship (First-Class), piling up 969 runs at an average of 51.00. Not long after came his first major trophy with Middlesex – the Twenty20 Cup 2008 (T20) title.

Dawid Malan - How His Professional Career Developed

The years that followed were a long, steady climb. Despite his success in county cricket, Dawid Malan did not get the call-up to the England national team until he was 29. But he quickly proved that age was no obstacle when it came to bossing it on the world stage. His debut came on 25 June 2017 in a T20I against South Africa. Batting at No.fc3, Malan produced a brilliant innings, scoring 78 off 44 balls at a strike rate of 177. England won the match, and Dawid was named Player of the Match. Later that same month, he made his Test debut against the same South African side, though in far more modest fashion, managing just one run. His ODI debut came much later, on 3 May 2019, in a match against Ireland. Over time, it was in the white-ball formats, especially T20Is, that he truly came into his own and became one of England’s key players.

Rather than going into a blow-by-blow breakdown of his entire career, let’s stick to the most significant achievements:

  • 2016 – won the County Championship Division One title with Middlesex;
  • 2017 – made his T20I debut against South Africa and was named Player of the Match;
  • 2020 – topped the ICC T20I Batting Rankings with a record rating of 915;
  • 2021 – became the fastest batter in T20I history to reach 1,000 runs, getting there in just 24 innings;
  • 2022 – won The Hundred with Trent Rockets and finished as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 377 runs;
  • 2022 – became a world champion with England at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia;
  • 2023 – named the PCA Metro Bank Men’s ODI Player of the Summer;
  • 2024 – once again struck gold with Oval Invincibles in The Hundred;
  • 2025 – member of the title-winning Fortune Barishal side in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

In August 2024, after the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where he was England’s leading batter with 404 runs, Dawid Malan announced his retirement from international cricket. He admitted that he felt “drained” after so many years competing at the highest level but also said he was proud of what he had achieved. Even though his England chapter is closed, Malan remains a highly sought-after free agent across franchise leagues around the world and continues to thrill fans with his batting. For example, in January 2026, he put together a string of powerful performances for Rangpur Riders, including 78 runs against Dhaka Capitals and 63 runs against Rajshahi Warriors in the BPL.
