Cricket in South Africa is one of the main sports entertainment for the inhabitants of this country. And it is not necessary to play cricket yourself, you can just watch the excellent play of the teams, of which there are really many. One of them is the South Western Districts, also known as the SW Districts or the simply SWD.
The club is first-class and represents the city of Oudtshoorn in Western Cape Town at the domestic tournaments of South Africa. The South Western Districts is part of the Cape Cobras franchise. The team plays cricket and tries to promote this game in its region by all available means.
The team’s logo is very original and interesting. It depicts cricket sports equipment (in particular, parts of the wicket and a cricket ball). Something resembling petals is painted on the ball, and on them is a ribbon with the inscription SWD Cricket.
South Western Districts: Highlights from Team History
The South Western Districts played their first first-class match in 1904. The game was against the Western Province cricket team at the Curry Cup in Mossel Bay. However, then the team had a long break in first-class cricket.
The SWD received an updated associate status from Cricket South Africa in 2004. From the 2006-2007 season, the team could take part in provincial three-day and one-day competitions. The South Western Districts’ status was upgraded to the full partnership only in 2013. The club has played 143 first-class matches as of the end of 2020.
South Western Districts: Club Stadium
The SWD home matches are played at the Recreation Ground, located in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape. The site is in an excellent location, in the very center of the city. It was founded in 1889. Unfortunately, we were unable to find information about the capacity in open sources.
Since its inception, the Recreation Ground has served as the home base for the South Western Districts. The stadium regularly hosts first-class matches, and in 2016 it hosted a large-scale Africa T20 Cup tournament, including the regular matches and the semi-final with the final.
South Western Districts: an overview of the official website and pages in social networks
The South Western Districts team has its official website. I must say that they tried very hard to saturate it with information: the site is very informative, news from the team appears regularly, the schedule of matches is given, and so on. In addition, the SWD website provides a detailed history of the club to broaden your horizons.
In addition, the SWD has pages on Facebook (over 4.5 thousand subscribers) and Twitter (about 300 subscribers). Links to them can be found in the upper right corner of the team site. The Twitter page has not been maintained since January 2020, but the content appears on Facebook regularly. This is mainly news related to the club’s activities (including vacancies), as well as congratulations to the players on their birthday.
South Western Districts: Current Team Composition and Achievements
A close-knit and professional team is the key to the success of any sports team. That is why their line-ups can change periodically, thanks to which the management is trying to find the perfect balance in the club.
The same goes for cricket teams. The South Western Districts line-up in 2021, at the time of writing, is following:
- Batsmen: Jean du Plessis, Jhedli van Briesies, Andre Malan, Yaseen Valli.
- Bowlers: Sintu Majeza, Marcello Piedt, Sean Whitehead.
- All-rounder: Onke Nyaku.
- Wicket-keeper: Hanno Kotze, Renaldo Meyer, Blayde Capell.
The South Western Districts are coached by Alan Kruger, a former All-rounder for the Griqualand West and Eagles teams.
As of 2021, the team does not have any high-profile titles. On the other hand, there are personal achievements that the South Western Districts also have a right to be proud of. For example, Gershwin Rabie – CSA Provincial Three-Day Player of the Season 2010/11, or Elridge Booysen – Pitchvision RPC Coach of the Year (2017/18). We are sure that the guys will be able to win new titles soon.
