Playing on

Playing on is a cricket term describing a situation in which a batsman manages to hit the ball, but his movement does not proceed as a batsman would like.

In this case, the batsman manages to guess only the vector of the projectile movement – towards the wicket. In such situations, it is customary to say playing on (the game continues), even though the player with the bat (out bowled) is “dragging on” or “chopping on” (knocked out of the rut).
