Northern Knights

The Irish cricket club Northern Knights was formed in 2013 on the territory of Northern Ireland with a population of 1.5 million people. The team participates in 3 popular tournaments of the country: the IP Cup, the IP Trophy and the IP Championship. The team has two championship titles: the Northern Knights players won the Inter-Provincial Cup in 2013 and became the Inter-Provincial Trophy winners in 2019. The team plays at Stormont Stadium, also known as the Civil Service Cricket Club. The capacity of the site is 6,000 people. The club is run by a local sports company, the Northern Cricket Union of Ireland. Such famous players as Harry Tector, Paul Stirling, Mark Adair and Graeme McCarter protect the team. This article introduces you to the history of the Northern Knights.

Northern Knights – participation in a first-class tournament

The Northern Cricket Union of Ireland is one of the provincial sports governing bodies. The Union was formed in 1886. NCUI is part of the Irish Cricket Union, the country’s premier cricket company. ICU was formed in 1923.

Since 1887, NCUI has been organizing the NCU Challenge Cup, a limited overs championship, and the NCU Senior League since 1897. By the way, the Northern Cricket Union of Ireland is the oldest provincial Union. Its main mission is to promote and improve cricket in Northern Ireland for men and women of all ages.

Since 2013, the local sports union has been replenished with the Northern Knights’ new cricket team. The club has been participating in 3 professional tournaments since the year of its foundation: the IP Cup, the IP Championship and the IP Trophy. Let’s analyze each championship separately.

The Inter-Provincial Championship is a domestic first-class cricket tournament. The championship was formed in 2013. The competition received its first-class status only in 2017. Matches last from 3 to 5 days, three teams play in the tournament (each club meets each other twice).

The debut drawing took place in May 2013. A total of 4 games were played, bringing the Northern Knights to 2nd place. It should be noted that the local team has not won this championship in the entire history (the Leinster Lightning – 6 times, the North West Warriors – 1 time). On the players from Northern Knightsaccount – 4 second places and 3 third places.

The last season took place in 2019. Then the team won the silver of the first-class tournament for the 4th time. The championship was canceled due to COVID-19 in 2020. ICU announced more attention to games with a limited number of overs in 2021, because of this, the IP Championship was also not held.

Northern Knights – results of other tournaments

The Inter-Provincial Cup is a professional cricket tournament held in a limited overs format (2 innings of 50 overs each). The tournament began in 2013. Four provincial teams are participating in it now.

The debut drawing took place from May 6 to September 21. In a bitter struggle, the Northern Knights became the first IP Cup champions. In the rest of the seasons, the Leinster Lightning team became the winner of the popular tournament. In turn, the club from Northern Ireland finished the championship five times in 2nd place and three times in 3rd. The last season ended on June 30, 2021. Here the team with 8 points took 3rd place.

Northern Knights - results of other tournaments

The Inter-Provincial Trophy is another recognizable championship in Ireland. As well as the previous two tournaments, the IP Trophy matches have been held since 2013. Game format: cricket with limited overs (two innings of 20 overs are played per match).

The 1st draw was from June 21 to July 21. The Northern Knights team was able to take only 2nd place on it. The real success happened in 2019: the club became the champion of the tournament six years later.

Thus, in the entire history of Northern Knights can boast of only two trophies:

  • Title of the champion at the IP Cup – 2013;
  • Title of the champion at the IP Trophy – 2019.

The next season of the Inter-Provincial Trophy matches is taking place from June 18 to September 19. Follow the results of the drawing with us!
