Ireland Cricket Team: history, composition and achievements
The Ireland cricket team represents the country in international competitions, participates in ODI, Test and T20I Cricket. At the same time, the history of the Irish team in the ICC began quite recently, in 2017. We tell you about what this team is, what path it has traveled to participate in first-class tournaments and who enters the field in its composition.
Ireland cricket team: the main achievements in the history of the team
The Irish have been playing cricket since the XVIII century, and by the beginning of the XIX century, cricket was already loved throughout the country. The first clubs began to be created, and already in 1855, the Irish in Dublin accepted the English. Everything seemed to be going fine, but then, in 1884, Ireland practically stopped playing cricket for more than 80 years. The reasons for this were political: the country did not encourage the practice of foreign sports, especially English ones. The history of Irish cricket resumed only in 1971, and until that time, certain prohibitions were imposed on cricketers, including the fact that they could play Irish sports, and the sports association did not very support cricket matches. Despite this, even during the ban period, the Irish played with Canada, the United States and South African teams.
The Ireland cricket team joined the ICC in 1993 and began to take part in tournaments held by this organization.
- ICC Cricket World Cup.The Irish became participants of this tournament for the first time in 2007, and before that, they could not qualify for many years in a row. In the group stage, they defeated Pakistan and Zimbabwe, veterans of the tournament – it was a success. Ireland has never won the title at the moment and has never played in the final. But the team has the Cricket World Cup Qualifier title, won in 2009. The national team does not manage to qualify every season; for example, they did not qualify for participation in 2019.
- ICC T20 World Cup. Ireland took part in this competition for the first time in 2009, the best result – Super 8s – also falls on this year.
The Irish national cricket team received the status of a full member of the ICC only in 2017, so all the most significant victories are still ahead.
As of June 2021, the team occupies the 12th position in the ODI and T20I ratings, and it does not participate in Test Cricket.
The composition of the Ireland cricket team and player ratings
