The Bob Willis Trophy was organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2020. How and for what purpose did it appear? We clarify: the COVID-19 pandemic was raging at that time, which affected all sports, including cricket. Many sporting events were canceled, and then, as a temporary alternative to traditional tournaments, the Bob Willis Trophy was created. The tourney was named after Robert George Dylan Willis, a famous English cricketer who, unfortunately, passed away in 2019. Robert was one of the most famous and best bowlers in the world. After finishing his career in sports in 1984, he became a sports commentator.
The Bob Willis Trophy championship features 18 first-class county teams in three regional groups. At the time of writing this text, two of these tournaments took place (in 2020 and 2021), all of them was at Lord’s Cricket Ground. It is not yet known whether the Bob Willis Trophy will be held on a permanent basis.
