A meeting was held at the BCCI office to discuss the results of Indian teams’ limited-overs performances abroad, which ended in defeats. National cricket officials, coaches, and team captains had a lot to discuss. At the BCCI review meeting, the necessary actions were identified given the current situation.
BCCI Review Meeting: Points of Discussion at Mumbai
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) meeting took place on September 3 in Mumbai. Among those present were senior BCCI officials: President Mithun Manhas, Secretary Devajit Saikia, Interim CEO Hemang Amin, Treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, Centre of Excellence Director VVS Laxman, and Head Coach Gautam Gabhir. Also spotted were national team captains in ODI and T20 formats Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. The meeting was necessary as India’s limited-overs teams’ losses on the field: T20 matches in England and Ireland were lost, as were ODI matches against British opponents.
BCCI review meeting was originally scheduled for July, but it was not possible to hold it immediately afterward, as India embarked on a T20 tour to Zimbabwe and also played Test matches in Sri Lanka. Both away events ended in victories, what added positivity to management. However, the previously planned meeting took place because certain issues remained unresolved. Furthermore, other important issues that had accumulated over the past two months were also discussed at the last meeting:
- The main topic of discussion at the meeting was the team’s current form. The athletes’ performances were assessed, and key moments of the matches that influenced the outcome were analyzed. It is reported that areas requiring improvement by players have been identified.
- Athlete injuries also became a major topic of discussion: in particular, the issue of Hardik Pandya’s role in the 2027 ODI World Cup was discussed, given his calf injury, which could limit the cricketer’s game.
- Rohit Sharma’s fate was not decided at the meeting, although his successful performance at Lord’s was on the agenda. The seasoned veteran will continue to play for the Indian ODI team and will not retire for now, Devajit Saikia later announced, dispelling rumors.
- The strategy and squads were planned for the upcoming multi-format T20, ODI and Test series in New Zealand, in which India will participate. The meeting also discussed plans for the domestic Border-Gavaskar tournament and the Limited Overs World Cup.
Following the meeting, Secretary Saikia addressed the press, specifically answering questions about Rohit Sharma. He also noted that Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar was absent from the meeting, although he was supposed to attend online but was unable to join virtually due to personal circumstances. Another interesting piece of news is that VVS Laxman will be the coach of the Indian national team at the Asian Games in Japan.
Why was it Necessary to Hold BCCI Review Meeting Now?
India is in a fairly good position ahead of major cricket events, including the ODI World Cup. Currently, the country ranks first in two ICC rankings: ODI and T20. Its Test rankings are slightly worse, at fourth. Limited-overs teams have performed well on the field. Against this background, the summer’s losses stand out negatively. For this reason, the BCCI meeting is essential to quickly understand the reasons for the lost matches and prevent future disappointments.
Winning the One-Day International World Cup will be a significant achievement for India. Although the event is scheduled for next year, preparations for it begin well in advance. Don’t expect any immediate decisions following the meeting. The results will be visible gradually. India faces interesting challenges in selecting the optimal lineup from its existing players and testing new strategies on the field.
