Recent reports claimed that Rohit Sharma’s international career was approaching its end and that the Board of Control for Cricket in India was prepared to drop him from the national team.

Sharma was allegedly informed by a member of the selection committee, although not its chairman, ahead of India’s away matches in England that the board had decided to start looking for his replacement. The news reportedly angered the player, although the two sides eventually managed to reach an understanding.

According to the rumours, the matches played in July were supposed to be the 39-year-old’s final international appearances. However, Sharma’s outstanding performance raised plenty of questions for the BCCI. Would dropping such an experienced batter ahead of a World Cup really be the right call?

Sharma proved his class in the match at Lord’s, scoring an impressive 138 runs. Perhaps the uncertainty surrounding his place in the team gave the cricketer some extra motivation. He certainly sent a clear message to the board: he has not lost his touch and is still capable of delivering at the highest level. It appears that this performance has extended Rohit Sharma’s ODI future for an indefinite period.

Following the BCCI’s latest meeting, board secretary Devajit Saikia was asked directly about Rohit Sharma’s future. He replied that the former India captain had played brilliantly and that this was all that needed to be said. Saikia did not want to give the rumour mill any more ammunition.

He added that it had been a routine review meeting involving the coach, the heads of the board’s cricket departments and the team captains. Such meetings are held once every three months, and no decisions concerning team selection were discussed. With that response, the BCCI secretary attempted to shut down the rumours surrounding Sharma’s possible retirement.

Thoughts on the Future of Rohit Sharma in ODI Cricket

Rohit Sharma is no youngster, he turned 39 in April. However, he has a wealth of experience behind him and has captained India in all three formats of the game.

Sharma has made his biggest mark in One Day International cricket with the bat. He has currently played 288 ODI matches, scoring 11,895 runs at an average of 48.95 and registering 34 centuries. Having such an experienced player in the squad would certainly be valuable for India during the upcoming World Cup campaign.

Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes, who is now a co-owner of the Rotterdam Dockers in the European T20 Premier League, has also shared his thoughts on the debate surrounding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future:

“Many people do not fully appreciate just how intense the pressure can be at a World Cup. You may be in excellent physical condition and performing confidently in regular matches, but everything changes when the pressure reaches its peak. Mental resilience is an extremely important factor when selecting a squad. As someone who played in four Cricket World Cups, I know what I am talking about and understand the stress that comes with competing on that stage. Given all his experience, Rohit would undoubtedly be a major asset to the Indian team.”

Sharma’s age inevitably means that India must consider backup options. However, the board currently appears to be standing behind its player, meaning the rumours about his retirement may remain nothing more than rumours.

Nobody from the cricketer’s camp has commented on the reports, while Rohit addressed the speculation in his usual style:

“No noise, no fun. My job is out on the field; theirs is off it. Rumours have followed me throughout my career, and they will continue for as long as I keep playing. What matters is what I do on the field.”

For now, Sharma finds himself in a favourable position. He remains an experienced, proven and dependable option for India. His performance at Lord’s was impressive enough to make the Board of Control for Cricket in India shelve any thoughts of replacing him – if such discussions ever took place at all.

There is therefore a strong possibility that Rohit Sharma will be included in India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
