Cricket Short

Short is an ambiguous term used in cricket to describe the following conditions:

In cricket, the term “cricket short” is context-dependent and commonly used in two distinct scenarios:

  • Fielding Position: Short refers to a fielding position closer to the batsman, typically within the 30-yard circle. Fielders placed in “short” positions such as short leg, short mid-wicket, or short cover – are positioned to catch balls that pop up off the bat with minimal reaction time. These positions are crucial in Test matches and first-class cricket where close-in catching is more common.
  • Bowling Length: A short-pitched delivery (or simply “short ball”) is one that bounces closer to the bowler and rises sharply toward the batsman. It is often used to surprise or intimidate the batsman, especially in fast bowling. Common variations include the bouncer, which aims at head height, and other cricket short deliveries aimed at creating discomfort or inducing a false shot.
