On top of that, due to missing government permissions and violations of fire-safety regulations, the stadium lost its right to host major matches, and parts of the infrastructure were even cut off from the power supply.
The election ultimately became a referendum on the urgent need for change within the KSCA. Riding a wave of support from members and prominent voices in Indian cricket, Venkatesh Prasad emerged as the preferred candidate. High-profile former teammates Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath publicly rallied behind him, strengthening his campaign. When the votes were counted, Prasad won decisively with 749 votes to KN Shanth Kumar’s 558, earning a clear mandate to step in as the KSCA’s new president for 2025.
Moments after his victory, Prasad emphasized that the outcome represented a triumph for cricket rather than for any individual. He interpreted the vote as a message from members who want international fixtures restored to M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Prasad also stressed cooperation with the Karnataka government and said his administration’s first priority would be to review the findings of the John Michael D’Cunha committee, whose assessment of the stadium’s structural vulnerabilities had previously forced major matches to shift away from Bengaluru.
