Khawar Ali: Sporting Career
Khawar Ali stands out in the world of cricket not only as a seasoned all-rounder with impressive on-field skills, but also as a passionate ambassador of the sport. His long journey from Pakistan to Oman and later to the United States reflects a level of determination and devotion to cricket that goes far beyond the boundaries of a simple game.
Khawar Ali was born on December 20, 1985, in the northern part of Pakistan, in its former capital, the major metropolis of Rawalpindi. There’s no precise information in open sources about his childhood and teenage years, but one thing is clear: at the age of 20, Khawar Ali caught the attention of selectors from Oman, who invited him to join their national team. Ali agreed to move to the wealthy Gulf nation.
It’s worth noting that Oman’s national team had only recently stepped onto the international stage: the squad played its first T20 matches in 2002 and mainly took part in the ACC Trophy and the ACC T20 Cup. But the team’s progress was so rapid and noticeable that by 2015 it received an invitation to play at the T20I level. Around that same time, Khawar Ali joined the side, just like many other cricketers from India and Pakistan, who today are still estimated to make up roughly 70-80% of the team.
Ali made his debut in a three-match series against the United Arab Emirates in October 2016. Later that same year, during the ICC World Cricket League (WCL) in Division Four, he was named the best player of the tournament. In early 2018, Khawar was included in Oman’s squad for Division Two of the ICC World Cricket League, and just a couple of months later he was appointed vice-captain for the Asia Cup Qualifier as well as vice-captain for ICC WCL Division Three.
And by the spring of 2019, Khawar witnessed a milestone moment. For that man was granted ODI status thanks to its outstanding performance in WCL Division Two.
But the biggest moment of Ali’s career was still ahead.
On October 9, 2019, at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground during the Oman Pentangular T20I Series, in a match against the Netherlands, Khawar Ali pulled off a hat-trick, knocking out three opponents in a row. For Oman, this was a crucial moment: the Netherlands quickly lost their key players, and Oman confidently carried the match through to victory. For Ali himself, it was a highlight of his career, earning him a spot among the small group of bowlers who’ve achieved such a feat on the international stage.
Despite a number of logistical challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Khawar delivered a brilliant season the following year, scoring nearly 500 runs and taking 15 wickets. He was awarded Oman Cricket’s highest honor for that: Player of the Year.
