The idea for this match arose following a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As part of the Sport 75 initiative, which highlights the strong diplomatic relations between the two countries over the past 75 years, it was decided to hold the Suzuki Cup tournament, featuring a T20I match between India and Japan. The meeting will take place on September 22 in the Japanese city of Sano. This sporting event is considered historic, as the men’s teams from the two countries have never before faced each other in a 20-over match.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia commented on the match: “This is a significant event for cricket. India will be playing in new territory, opening up the opportunity to attract a wider Japanese audience to our sport. India and Japan share long-standing friendly relations, and we are delighted that cricket will become part of the celebrations marking the bilateral ties between the two countries. We are grateful to the Japan Cricket Association for making this match possible.”
This match is just the first step in the Sport 75 initiative, which aims to further develop sports relations between India and Japan. India has ambitious goals for the next ten years, including hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Representatives of the country’s sports committee hope that the Suzuki Cup will serve as a stepping stone toward building a positive image of the country as a potential host for Olympic events.
BCCI Targets Cricket Audience Growth Following India vs Japan T20I Game
The Board of Control for Cricket in India believes that the best way to attract new audiences to the sport is to look beyond traditional match regions. And since the BCCI is the largest organization governing cricket, its representatives take responsibility for its development. The Suzuki Cup and the India vs Japan T20I are an example of expanding the boundaries of sports. However, it will not stop at just one match: the BCCI will continue to maintain close ties with the Japan Cricket Association and help strengthen cricket in Japan.
“The opportunity to invite the reigning world champions to the home of Japanese cricket is a momentous occasion for our association. We are grateful to the BCCI for their cooperation and contribution to organizing this event. On match day, we expect to see Indian fans with their boundless enthusiasm alongside cricket-loving residents of Japan,” said Naoki Miyaji, Executive Director of the JCA.
As previously noted, India and Japan will face each other for the first time in this specific format. Looking at the statistics, Japan will be the twentieth country against which India plays a T20 match. India enters the match as the favorite, as the country currently holds the top spot in the ICC T20I rankings, whereas Japan sits far back in 41st place.
However, Japan is becoming more involved in cricket, at least from an organizational standpoint. In addition to this match, the country is currently hosting the Asian Games; the first women’s cricket matches have already taken place. It is known that India will face Sri Lanka in the women’s tournament final, while the men’s group stage matches will begin on September 24.
