Chamari Athapaththu Joins Hobart Hurricanes

Hobart Hurricanes have responded to a significant injury setback by recruiting one of the most experienced attacking batters in women’s cricket. Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu arrives as an overseas replacement for Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who will miss the WBBL season through injury. For the defending champions, the signing provides an established option ahead of their opening match against Melbourne Stars on 29 October.

An Experienced Batter for a Demanding Top-Order Role

With 69 WBBL appearances behind her, the Sri Lanka captain brings substantial experience to her new club. The announcement that Chamari Athapaththu joins Hobart Hurricanes follows spells with Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder. Her standout campaign came in WBBL|09, when she scored 552 runs at an average of 42.46, registered five half-centuries and earned Player of the Tournament honours.

Those numbers matter because Hobart needs more than occasional boundary hitting. Replacing an established batter requires someone capable of surviving a difficult opening spell, recognising when to accelerate and converting a promising start into an innings that shapes the match.

From a tactical perspective, Athapaththu’s left-handed batting gives the Hurricanes another way to challenge opposition plans. A left-right combination can require repeated adjustments to bowling lines and field placements. When both batters rotate the strike effectively, a bowler has less opportunity to settle into a consistent channel.

Her potential value during the powerplay is particularly clear. With fielding restrictions in place, well-timed attacking shots can force a captain to reconsider an aggressive field. However, early wickets can quickly change the assignment. Hobart will need their senior batters to judge when to keep attacking and when to establish a partnership.

That balance is especially important in a run chase. A sequence of dot balls can raise the required rate without producing an obvious turning point. Finding singles between boundary opportunities helps prevent the innings from becoming dependent on one expensive over.

Athapaththu’s arrival should therefore be assessed through both scoring speed and innings management. A rapid start has greater value when it leaves the middle order with a manageable equation. Equally, an innings that absorbs early pressure can create the platform for a strong finish.

Her exact batting position and opening partner remain selection decisions. The signing gives Hobart flexibility, but its effectiveness will depend on how clearly the coaching staff define her role.

Bowling Options and Squad Depth Strengthen Hobart’s Plans

Hobart’s bowling plans also gain flexibility with the signing. While the news that Chamari Athapaththu joins Hobart Hurricanes naturally draws attention to her batting, her off-spin offers another option for breaking partnerships. She collected nine wickets during her award-winning season with Sydney Thunder, showing her ability to contribute beyond the top order.

As a tactical option, additional spin can help a captain respond when the original bowling plan is disrupted. If a frontline bowler proves expensive, another available option can prevent the attack from becoming predictable. It can also allow a captain to preserve a preferred seamer for the death overs.

That does not mean Athapaththu must deliver a full allocation in every match. Her workload should depend on the surface, the batters at the crease and the demands of the innings. A short spell that breaks a partnership or restricts scoring can be valuable without producing headline figures.

Hobart has also added wicketkeeper-batter Kate Pelle after her productive T20 Spring Challenge. Opening while Lizelle Lee was unavailable, Pelle scored 136 runs across four matches, including 61 against ACT Meteors and 43 against Perth Scorchers. Her contract adds another batting option and wicketkeeping cover alongside Lee.

The two additions address different needs. Athapaththu brings extensive experience of international and franchise cricket, while Pelle provides competition for places and additional cover. Across a demanding tournament, that depth can help a team respond to injuries, changes in form or a different balance required by conditions.

For the defending champions, the immediate task is to turn those options into a coherent XI. Top-order aggression must be supported by dependable strike rotation, and bowling variety must be matched by accurate execution. Strong fielding will remain essential: a dropped catch or an unnecessary extra can undo the pressure created by an otherwise disciplined over.

Athapaththu gives Hobart a proven performer at a moment when they have lost an important player. The next test comes against Melbourne Stars, where the Hurricanes can begin establishing how their revised batting lineup and bowling combinations will support another title challenge.
