Brendon McCullum’s dismissal as head coach of England’s Test team has brought one of the most exciting periods in modern cricket to an end. Brendon McCullum Sacked: England Begin Their Rebuild
The decision to dismiss Brendon McCullum came amid a noticeable decline in the England Test team’s results. The team won only three of their last 11 matches, suffered a heavy 4-1 Ashes defeat and then lost 2-1 to New Zealand at home.
After that series ended, captain Ben Stokes unexpectedly announced his retirement from international cricket, leaving the team without one of its most important leaders of recent years.
The ECB had not initially planned to replace the coach. An internal review carried out after the Ashes found that McCullum was still considered the right man for the job. However, the defeat to New Zealand and Stokes’ subsequent retirement forced the management to rethink its decision and launch a full-scale rebuild of the Test team.
The Brendon McCullum Sacked news was officially confirmed on 12 July. The New Zealander will no longer prepare England for Test matches, but he will remain head coach of the ODI and T20 teams.

Despite the ECB’s unexpected decision, Brendon McCullum responded calmly and did not publicly criticise the board. He admitted that leaving the Test team was difficult for him but said he respected the management’s decision and intended to focus fully on working with England’s ODI and T20 sides.
“I absolutely loved working with the Test team, and I am genuinely proud of what we were able to achieve together. Of course, it is difficult for me to accept that I will no longer be continuing in this role, but I respect the management’s decision.”
McCullum also thanked the players, coaching staff and supporters for the backing he received throughout his four years in charge. According to the coach, England’s dressing room is still packed with talented players. He therefore sincerely wishes the Test team every success in the future and remains confident that it can go on to achieve more major victories.
England’s results under Brendon McCullum
Brendon McCullum took charge of England’s Test team in May 2022 and began his tenure with a home series against New Zealand. At the time, the team was going through a serious crisis: before his arrival, England had won just one of their previous 17 Test matches.
The start was impressive. England picked up ten victories in their first 11 Tests under McCullum, while their new style of play became known as Bazball. The team began scoring runs more quickly, taking more risks and pushing for victory even in situations where they would previously have preferred to play it safe.
However, the results declined over time. England played a total of 49 Tests under McCullum, winning 27, losing 20 and drawing two. Since the 2023 Ashes, the team’s record has stood at 14 wins and 16 defeats, with the biggest setbacks including the 4-1 loss to Australia and the 2-1 home series defeat against New Zealand.
