Australia Injury Setbacks Before Final ODI

Australia’s cricket tour of South Africa has been a frustrating one so far. Not only did the visitors lose the first two one-day internationals, but injuries have also taken their toll on the squad. Nathan Ellis and Joel Davies are among those sidelined. Australia’s ODI injury setbacks have only rubbed salt into the wound during an already difficult campaign.

Australia Injury Setbacks Before Final ODI: Ellis and Davies Begin Recovery, Edwards Under Observation

Australia’s ODI series against South Africa slipped away after defeats in the first two games of the three-match contest, leaving the visitors with no chance of claiming the series. For Australia’s selectors, however, the growing injury list has become the main concern. Nathan Ellis and Joel Davies were ruled out before the final ODI, further exposing the strain on Australia’s squad. No replacements were brought in, leaving the team to head into the final match with the players still available.

Nathan Ellis bowled just four overs in Sunday’s second ODI before leaving the field midway through the innings. It later emerged that he had suffered a left side strain. Joel Davies also picked up an injury during the same match, straining his right hamstring while playing.

Australia also has concerns over Jack Edwards, who claimed his maiden five-wicket haul on Sunday. After the match, however, he was placed under medical observation with a suspected hamstring strain. Unlike Davies and Ellis, Edwards travelled to Potchefstroom for the third ODI. Even so, he did not take the field for the match.

Australia won the rain-shortened third ODI against South Africa, securing a 45-run victory under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. The result gave the visitors something to smile about, although it did little to change the bigger picture. South Africa wrapped up the series 2-1, while Australia were left with just 12 players in their limited-overs squad.

Australia Injury Setbacks Before Final ODI: What Comes Next for Ellis and Edwards?

Australia’s tour of South Africa is not over yet. A three-match Test series is still to come, with the opening Test scheduled for October 9-13. Australia have separate squads for the longer format and limited-overs cricket, allowing the ODI and T20 players to take a breather following the injury setbacks before the final ODI.

In Ellis’s case, his heavy workload may have contributed to the injury, as he played five ODIs in just 12 days. He performed well across those matches, taking his wicket tally for the year to 22. It would be fair to say that he has all but nailed down a place in Australia’s squad for the 2027 World Cup. For now, he has six weeks to recover before the home series against England.

Jack Edwards has already dealt with a hamstring injury this year and missed the IPL season because of a foot injury. He was called up for the South Africa tour to cover for Cameron Green, whose shoulder problem has prevented him from bowling on the trip so far. Having either Green or Edwards available as an all-rounder is important for Australia’s ODI balance, giving them greater bowling depth in the first innings when the opposition wins the toss and chooses to bat. On some worn pitches, batting first can offer an advantage, making a strong bowling attack particularly valuable in those conditions. Edwards will remain under the care of a physiotherapist to avoid aggravating his injury. With Green, meanwhile, Australia can do little but wait for his shoulder to recover.
