The Pakistan men’s cricket team is going through a rough patch, as its on-field results are far from ideal. Their away matches played in England at the end of August ended in a crushing defeat for Pakistan at the hands of the hosts: England won by an innings and 103 runs in Leeds, and by 194 runs at Lord’s. Following these dismal results, Pakistan cricket officials decided to bring in Mike Hesson immediately, hoping for Pakistan reset ahead of 3rd test in Edgbaston. Hesson noted that the appointment caught him off guard, but he is ready to take on the duties of coach of the national team. At the same time, the New Zealander stated that his role is only temporary.
“It all happened very quickly. I was in Japan, preparing for the Asian Games, when I got the call. I returned to Lahore and then immediately headed to Birmingham to join the team for training. I was asked to become the coach because the national team needed changes. We had to organize everything as quickly as the situation allowed,” Hesson said at a press conference ahead of the third Test match at Edgbaston.
Pakistan’s management is ready to do whatever it takes to rectify the situation, and such a swift appointment is a clear confirmation of their intentions. Mike Hesson is an experienced coach, yet the task ahead of him is far from easy. He will have limited time to assess the capabilities of the current squad and determine the right game strategy. Hesson will have to work with the players remaining on the roster, as several cricketers — including Salman Ali Agha, the former captain of the Pakistan T20 team that Hesson previously coached — were sent home alongside the appointment of the new coach. Hesson himself disagrees with this decision, but he did not participate in the process of selecting the squad for the final match against England.
“I don’t know why these specific players were suspended. I believe Salman has been one of Pakistan’s best cricketers over the past couple of years. He had three poor Test matches, but he is a good player. Up to this point, I haven’t been involved in the national team’s red-ball matches, so I am not a member of the selection committee and have no connection to the current squad,” said Mike Hesson.
During Pakistan’s training session ahead of the match at Edgbaston, the new coach will have to find a way to connect with the players and steer the team in the right direction. Essentially, Hesson needs to paint a picture using the colors he has at his disposal. However, if the Pakistan team can show progress compared to their first two matches, Hesson will significantly boost his reputation as a crisis manager.

Pakistan is trying to find the optimal squad for the match at Edgbaston, even though the away series is already lost, as England leads 2–0 with one game remaining on the schedule. The goal is to assemble an optimal attacking line-up that, under the leadership of Hesson, could compete with the English, and at least end the series on a positive note. At the moment, the emphasis is on the bowling attack, taking into account the conditions of the English pitch. Ali Usman is not included in Pakistan reset plans and Mike Hesson tells why:
“Ali Usman is an excellent bowler, but conditions in the UK at this time of year are such that there is no need to include a finger-spinner in the lineup unless he can also bat. We are not in a position to afford keeping a player in the team whose contribution to the match is limited to two overs,” Hesson said in response to a question about Usman.
Hesson’s view on Usman’s exclusion differs from the reaction to the dropping of other players. In this instance, the coach’s stance aligned with that of the Pakistan cricket board, even though Usman’s removal — after he had taken five wickets at Leeds — strikes many as odd.
Preparations for the final match are taking place in an unusual atmosphere due to player turnover; however, the coach noted that the arrival of new cricketers would add variety to the attack. Hesson has made it clear that the immediate goal is to make progress and — at the very least — produce a more competitive performance at Edgbaston, before turning his focus to future matches.
