Lhuan-dre Pretorius Scores a Maiden Century in T20 Games
The Tri-Series tournament serves as preparation for the upcoming 2027 Cricket World Cup, benefiting both the organizers and the local teams. Moreover, the tournament demonstrates that matches played in Africa can be fiercely competitive. The contests between the three African national teams were intense and proved to be no walkover for South Africa. The series schedule included six qualifying matches, the results of which determined the two finalists.
The South African national team lost its first match against Namibia but managed to defeat Zimbabwe twice. Before the final qualifying game, South Africa faced Namibia again. With two wins to their opponents’ one, the team needed to win the match. Namibia hoped to repeat the success of the first game, but South Africa did not make any mistakes, and the Lhuan-dre Pretorius century put an end to Namibia and sent South Africa to the final match.
Luan-dre Pretorius was the standout player for South Africa in the final Tri-Series qualifying match on September 4, scoring his maiden T20 international century and playing a pivotal role in the team’s advancement to the tournament final. Pretorius scored 101 runs before leaving the field. The 20-year-old player came close to this achievement two days earlier, scoring 94 runs in a match against Zimbabwe.
Luan-Dre Pretorius opened the batting as a junior partner alongside Connor Esterhuizen. Their partnership proved highly productive. Eysterhuizen started the match quite calmly, scoring just one run off five balls, but then stepped up his game and hit eight sixes to all parts of the field. Pretorius also recorded the same amount. At one point, it seemed Esterhuizen would be the first to reach a century, but an ill-fated slog-sweep against Jan Balt ended the batsman’s innings. Nevertheless, he left the field with a solid 88 runs off 12 overs.
Pretorius was the only one to put up a worthy fight after Eysterhuizen left the field. Dewald Brevis scored just 3 runs, hitting the ball poorly towards long-off, while Rubin Hermann took 21 balls to score 26 runs. Pretorius, meanwhile, supplemented his sixes with four fives, bringing his total to 101 runs off 53 balls.
Namibia attempted to turn the tide while batting: opening batsman Jan Frylinck played a confident innings of 72 runs off 36 balls, and Lohan Louwrens added another 61 runs to the total; however, the team fell 11 runs short of matching their opponents’ score. The final score of the match between South Africa and Namibia was 228/4 to 217/3.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius Century Helped South Africa Succeed in Tri-Series
The qualifying matches against Namibia were no walk in the park for the South African national team. The defeat in the first match made the situation more difficult for the team, and, as it turned out, Lhuan-dre Pretorius’s century proved to be one of the key moments of the tournament. The athlete’s brilliant performance, along with Esterhuizen’s points, prevented the home team from catching up with South Africa in the second match. Having secured a spot in the final, the South African team was able to focus on Zimbabwe, whom they had beaten twice during the qualifying stage.
South Africa defeated Zimbabwe by 48 runs in the Tri-Series final. Zimbabwe did not put up enough resistance against their opponents. Jordan Hermann and Connor Esterhuizen took control early on, capitalizing on their opponents’ errors.
Luan-Dre Pretorius did not have a chance to attempt another century this time. He had to miss the match due to a minor groin injury he sustained the day before. Nevertheless, his performance in the tournament left a strong impression. There is no doubt that the young athlete will make his mark in the future, including at major events.
