Harry Brook England Captaincy Put on Hold: Joe Root to Lead England’s Test Team Again
England are entering a new era following a major appointment ahead of their series against Pakistan. Joe Root has been named captain of the Test side. He has already held the role in the past, so this will not be completely unfamiliar territory for him.
Many people were asking: could Harry Brook take the England captaincy? Ultimately, that did not happen. Brook himself said that he was “1,000 percent” behind Root and fully supported his appointment, as he believed it was the right decision.
According to Brook, Joe Root is an excellent captain, and the team will benefit from his experience, maturity and measured approach to the game. Right now, that is exactly what England needs.
Harry Brook has captained England in limited-overs cricket, leading the team in both ODIs and T20Is. Across these formats, he has played close to 100 matches and produced some outstanding performances. During the 2026 T20 World Cup, he smashed a century off just 50 balls, writing his name into the history books. He was later appointed vice-captain of England’s Test side for the Ashes series.
Brook remains England’s vice-captain. However, following Ben Stokes‘ departure, the leadership role did not go to him, with the management instead choosing to bring Root back as captain.
Naturally, many people linked that decision to last year’s incident at a bar in Wellington, where Brook became involved in an altercation with a security guard. The player himself would rather not dwell on the episode and is focused on the matches ahead.
What Incident May Have Cost Harry Brook the Captaincy?
Let us recap what happened to Harry Brook. In January this year, he found himself in the media spotlight because of an unpleasant incident that had taken place in New Zealand in late October 2025, when he attempted to enter a nightclub in Wellington.
The incident occurred on the night before an ODI. Brook was reportedly refused entry to the club because he appeared to be intoxicated, leading to an altercation between the cricketer and one of the venue’s security guards.
Brook told the England team management what had happened the following day. However, the story did not emerge in the media until two months later, when journalists discovered that the ECB had handed him a disciplinary fine of £30,000.
It also emerged that Brook had not been alone. He had been accompanied by his England teammates Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue, neither of whom he initially mentioned. Brook had originally told team officials that he had been on his own that night. The incident may have put Harry Brook’s captaincy prospects in jeopardy.
“I want to apologise for my actions. My behaviour was wrong and brought embarrassment not only on me but also on the England team,” Brook later said.
“It was a difficult period, particularly with the prospect of facing the media. At the same time, however, it helped me understand that leadership is not just about guiding a team on the field. It is also about taking responsibility away from the game.”
Brook said that his sole focus is now on the upcoming matches, as the immediate objective is to win several games of cricket. As for the captaincy, he has not given up on that dream and believes another opportunity will come his way in the future.
His leadership experience in ODI and T20I cricket should certainly stand him in good stead. For the time being, however, he is ready to follow Root and support him in his new role.
One of Joe Root‘s first decisions as captain, incidentally, was to scrap the curfew that had previously been imposed on England’s players ahead of important matches.
Pundits believe this was the right call, as the curfew failed to solve all of the team’s problems while creating new ones at the same time. Root may now be able to restore the sense of harmony that the England dressing room had previously been missing.
