The India women’s cricket team comfortably swept aside Thailand in their opening match of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup. The victory was largely inspired by two standout performers: Shafali Verma, whose aggressive batting earned her 64 runs, and Deepti Sharma, whose record-breaking spell ultimately sealed the win for India.
Deepti Sharma Record Spell Goes Down in History
The Women’s T20 Asia Cup is underway in Dubai, and the opening fixtures have certainly lived up to expectations. The clash between India and Thailand has already produced a historic moment for Deepti Sharma.
India went on to win the match after Shafali Verma attacked Thailand’s bowlers from the very first ball and smashed an impressive 64 runs before returning to the pavilion. Deepti Sharma then took over, claiming three wickets without conceding a single run – a stunning spell that effectively wrapped up the victory for her team.
India began to lose momentum midway through their innings, while Thailand spinner Suleeporn Laomi did everything she could to bring her side back into the contest. She also picked up three wickets, but her efforts were ultimately not enough to change the outcome.
Deepti Sharma Record Spell, which saw her take three wickets in seven deliveries without giving away a single run, increased her career tally in T20 Internationals to 171 wickets. That achievement made Sharma the outright leading wicket-taker in the history of women’s T20I cricket. It is also worth noting that this was the all-rounder’s 150th T20I appearance – another major milestone in her remarkable career.
Deepti Sharma is a 29-year-old all-rounder who managed to surpass Thailand bowler Thipatcha Putthawong’s previous record of 170 T20I wickets. Sharma also became only the third Indian women’s cricketer, after Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana, to reach the landmark of 150 T20I appearances. She marked the occasion in the best possible way by going one step further and claiming the all-time wicket-taking record.
Deepti Sharma’s Record-Breaking Performance Powered India to Victory
India got off to a flying start through vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, who scored 19 runs from just 10 balls before being run out by Aphisara Suwanchonrathi. Shafali Verma then continued where Mandhana had left off, taking on Thailand’s spinners and quickly closing in on her half-century.
As more gaps began to open up in the field, Verma confidently picked her moments to attack. She kept the pressure firmly on the bowlers, holding back when the situation called for patience and going after them whenever they looked vulnerable.
Verma eventually launched a delivery from Suleeporn Laomi over the boundary to bring up the 19th T20I half-century of her career from only 26 balls. With India sitting comfortably at 91/1 after 8.5 overs, the team appeared to be in complete control of the match.
However, India almost completely lost their grip on the innings during the middle overs. The team lost four wickets for just 21 runs, exposing familiar weaknesses in its middle order. The dismissal of captain Harmanpreet Kaur did little to improve the situation, and India eventually slipped to 137/9 after 17.2 overs.
Deepti Sharma had earlier been run out for five during India’s batting innings. However, she returned to make a much greater impact with the ball. In the 17th over of Thailand’s chase, Deepti struck with her very first delivery, dismissing wicketkeeper-batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai. Nannapat had been the only Thailand batter to put up serious resistance, scoring 41 runs before being sent back to the pavilion.
Nevertheless, Sharma’s Record Spell and Verma’s explosive opening knock had given India a big enough cushion to make up for the team’s loss of momentum during the middle stages of the game. Kranti Goud also deserves credit for her valuable late contribution, scoring an unbeaten 15 runs from only eight balls and helping India finish the innings on a stronger note.
India won the match by 94 runs, which looks like a highly convincing result on paper. However, the final margin could have been even greater if the team had avoided its dramatic middle-order collapse.
Thailand had already picked up a victory against Hong Kong, but the team must now add a defeat to its tournament record. India are also set to face Hong Kong in their next Women’s Asia Cup fixture. If the Indian side manages to secure a second consecutive victory, it will significantly strengthen its position and improve its chances of going all the way in the tournament.
