The Blackcaps’ home summer gets underway on October 22 with a T20I series against India, followed by an ODI series and two Test matches. For now, though, the team’s attention is firmly on the five Twenty20 internationals that come first on the schedule. When putting together the squad, New Zealand’s selectors had to factor in the need to manage the workloads of several key Blackcaps players ahead of the ODI and Test fixtures. That balancing act has helped open the door for Adam Milne’s T20I return.
The 34-year-old last represented the Blackcaps in the 20-over format in the summer of 2025, when New Zealand faced South Africa in Harare. He missed the T20 World Cup through injury but is now back in the squad. A seasoned fast bowler, Milne brings pace and experience that could prove valuable on the field.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter shared his thoughts on the T20I squad: “We have a squad that is close to ideal. With the players we have available, we have almost every base covered with both bat and ball. I can’t wait to see how we go against the reigning champions.”
Discussing selection, Walter added: “Our priority is to win, and that means putting our best side on the park. This time, though, we also have to take the packed schedule over the coming months into account.”
The New Zealand coach made it clear that managing player workloads will be a key task throughout the upcoming fixtures. All-rounder Rachin Ravindra, for example, has been ruled out of at least the T20I series after dislocating his right shoulder during a promotional shoot. For New Zealand, ensuring that every player is ready to contribute when needed will be crucial.
Milne is being backed to make an impact in the 20-over format. He has 56 T20 internationals under his belt, having bowled 1,157 deliveries, conceded 1,603 runs and taken 65 wickets over the course of his career in the format. Bringing an experienced campaigner back into the fold gives the Blackcaps’ bowling attack an extra edge.

For New Zealand, the series also offers a chance to turn the tables on India after losing to them in the final of the T20 World Cup earlier in 2026. Thirteen players from that World Cup squad have also been named for this series.
Mitchell Santner will captain the side. Milne joins fellow quicks Lockie Ferguson, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy, with younger seamers Zack Foulkes and Nathan Smith rounding out the pace options. Milne is not the only player returning from injury: all-rounder Michael Bracewell is also back in the Blackcaps’ squad.
One notable absentee is Rachin Ravindra, whose shoulder injury is outlined above. Rob Walter is hopeful that the all-rounder will be fit to return for the ODI series.
New Zealand’s opening match against India takes place on October 22 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. A strong crowd is expected, with a substantial number of tickets already sold a month before the series begins.
